AEROSPACE

ENGINEERING
What is Aerospace Engineering?
Aerospace engineering deals
with designing and building
machines that fly. It is one
of the newest branches of
engineering, and began in
the 19th century with the
first experiments in
powered flight.
Branches of Aerospace Engineering
 Aeronautical Engineering
-is the science involved with
the study, design, and
manufacture of flight-capable
machines, or the techniques
of operating aircraft.

Astronautical engineering
- developing aircraft and
aerospace products such as
rockets, missiles,
communication satellites,
space launchers, space
vehicles ETC.
History of Aerospace Enginnering
The Early innovators
of powered, lighter-
than-air craft included
Jules Henri Giffard,
who in 1852 flew
the first steerable
steam-powered
airship.
George Cayley
 The wright brothers first
flight on December 17
1903 sparked interest
in Aerospace
Engineering on a whole
different level.

On December 17, 1903, at
Kitty Hawk, North
Carolina, the Wright
Flyer became the first
powered, heavier-than-
air machine to achieve
controlled, sustained
flight with a pilot aboard.
NASA
 National Aeronautics and
Space Administration
 NASA was established in
1958, succeeding
the National Advisory
Committee for
Aeronautics (NACA).
 it is an organization that
makes huge advancement
on aerospace engineering.

Parts of a Jet Engine
Fan
The large spinning fan
sucks in large quantities
of air. Most blades of the
fan are made of
titanium. It then speeds
this air up and splits it
into two parts. One part
continues through the
"core" or center of the
engine.
Compressor
. The compressor
squeezes the air that
enters it into
progressively smaller
areas, resulting in an
increase in the air
pressure. This results in
an increase in the energy
potential of the air. The
squashed air is forced
into the combustion
chamber.
Combustion Chamber
In the combustor the air
is mixed with fuel and
then ignited. There are
as many as 20 nozzles to
spray fuel into the
airstream. The mixture
of air and fuel catches
fire. This provides a high
temperature, high-
energy airflow.
Turbine
The high-energy airflow
coming out of the
combustor goes into the
turbine, causing the
turbine blades to rotate.
This rotation takes some
energy from the high-
energy flow that is used to
drive the fan and the
compressor.
Nozzle
The nozzle is the exhaust
duct of the engine. This is
the engine part which
actually produces the
thrust for the plane. he
combination of the hot air
and cold air are expelled
and produce an exhaust,
which causes a forward
thrust.
Types of jet engine

Turboprops
Turbofans
Turbo shaft
Ramjets
