BASIC INFROMATION
80% of transportation are made by private road transportation
-> congestion and pollution
Congestion is especially bad in Britain because dense population and number of vehicle
transport daily.
People want to move around easily but they don’t like to live in a major city
-> NIMBY (Not In My BackYard). But any propose about expanding new road or
railway
-> campaign to stop construction because of “housing blight” (the value of houses near
and along the way will go down)
On the road
• ¾ of households in B have regular use of car and 1/3 have > 1 car.
• The reason: project an image of themselves, have a car = taking your
“castle” with you
• Not very keen on motorcycles because the B don’t think bikes are not
private enough, cycle-lane are undeveloped, lack of safety on the road.
• Bikes only famous for the youth at university towns (Cambridge).
Public transportation in towns and cities
Public transport suffer from so much private vehicle -> public transport
not as cheap, frequent, fast as they should, stop runing at early night.
Modern development is tram, disapear from the 1950s-1960s, comeback
Double-decker bus is famous in Britain. Although, single-decker is still
viable, London still has 3,000 double-deckers in operation
Public transportation in towns and cities
• Underground (tube) opened in 1863 -> the dirtiest and least effective in all
European city, but still be used heavilly because of excellent connections
with the other city’s suburbs.
• Another symbol of London: black taxi (now, not all black or confined to
London). Normally, call them off the street. Those who hired by phone are
minicabs. Both are expensive. Usually being used when going home at
late night or drunk.
The channel tunnel
• The biggest buiding Britain involved in 20th century, several workers was
killed during the construction (atleast 9), the price doubled that first
estimate (13 bil ->21 bil). Some people felt hesitate to go through to travel
under water (much like Thu Thiem tunnel but ten fold)
• Negative attitudes have dissapeared, however, not as many people who
used private vehicle as expected. This is not the case for train service,
Eurostar. Take 2 hrs from London to Paris.
Air and water
• International fly crucial for B. B has 4 airports in the world’s top 30.
Gatwick (south London), Stansed (north London), Manchester and
Heathrow (western edged of London)
• Modern B don’t make a lot of use of its inland waterways. Last century,
Thames is busy. Transport by land has taken over. Several attemps but not
success. The leisure industry has found a use of waterway as boating
holiday.
