What is Play Deprivation?
In your own words define the term 'play deprivation'

Play deprivation means to deprive a child of the


opportunity or time to play. If a child does not have the
opportunity or time to play it can have an impact on child's
learning or development.
When could a child be
deprived of play
opportunities?
• Due to long term illness or
hospitalisation
• Due to pandemics such as
COVID-19
• Due to lack of access of safe
space
• Due to protective parenting
• Due to increased use of
electronics
• Due to poverty
• Due to neglect or abuse
• Due to war
How can play deprivation
impact on children?

In small groups you will be given a circumstance


which could mean a child is play deprived I want
you to discuss the potential impacts this could have
on the child's learning and development in both the
short and long term.
You then need to produce a mind map of these ideas
with your circumstance in the center and add
statistical information to back up your thoughts.

Impacts of Play Deprivation

'Sustained, moderate-to-severe play deprivation during the first 10


years of life appears to be linked to poor early child development,
later leading to depression, difficulty adapting to change, poorer
self-control, and a greater tendency to addiction as well as fragile
and shallower interpersonal relationships.' (Childandfamilyblog,
2018)
