CRITICAL GROWTH STAGES OF SUGAR CANE
1. Germination phase this phase start from planting to the
completion of germinatin of buds.this phase takes about 30 to35
days.germination denotes activation and subsequent sprouting
of the vegetative bud.

2. Tillering phase tillering start from 45 days and may last upto 120
days of the crop.this stage is most critical for irrigation.

• Sugarcane is most sensitive to weed infestation during

tillering .so sugarcane crop should be kept weed free during its
tillering phase.

3.Grand growth stage this stage is most critical for irrigation.

• Weeds pose tough competition to crop until the grand growth
phase sets.duration ranges from 150 days after planting.
CRITICAL GROWTH STAGES OF SUGAR BEET

1. Post thinning – it is the impornant critical growth

period of sugar beet.

2. leaves wilting during heat of the day due to less

moisture.

3. Excessive irrigation lowers sugar content.

 CRITICAL GROWTH STAGES OF WHEAT
1. Emergence appearance of coleoptiles from germinating seeds above the
soil surface.

2. Crown root initiation stage [CRI] this coincides with three or four leaf
stage in which the crown roots appear.

3. Booting in this stage the upper most leaf swells out into flag holding the
spike into it.

4. Heading the spikes start emerging out from the leaf sheath at this stage.

5. Flowering anthesis of florets and fertilization of ovaries take place.

CRITICAL GROWTH STAGES OF RABI SORGHUM
1. Three leaf stage it is start from seedling emergence to panicle intiation and
the duration ranges from 33 to 45 days.moisture stress during this stage
results poor yield.

2. Flag leaf stage it is the second important critical growth stage.It start from
panicle initiation to anthesis and duration rages from 40 to 80 days.This
stage is crucial for panicle development and differentiation.

3. Boot stage head extended into flag leaf.

4. Soft dough milky stage duration ranges from 65 to 85 days.

5. Hard dough milky stage converted into hard dough stage.duration ranges
from 75 to 85 days after emergence.

 These stages are most sensitive to soil moisture

stress.

 Practically their should be no rain specially at the

time of flowering.

Low humidity should be require at this stage.

These two stages are critical for irrigation.

Yield can be doubled if two irrigation are given,

The first irrigation at 35 days.

The second irrigation at 65 days to get good
economic yield of linseed

These two stages are most critical for moisture soil moisture
stress.

Water deficit during early vegetative period [rosette development ],

Elongation and branching at 30 to 60 days ,flowering and seed

filling results in poor yield.
CRITICAL GROWTH STAGES OF FORAGE CROP
VEGETATIVE GROWTH is important in case of forage
crop.

Berseem requiers about 20 irrigations during its

growth at intervals of 20 days during december and
January and 10 days during september october.

Lucerne needs about 1800 to 2000 mm of water

during the first year of growth.
