INTRODUCTION
 As old line crop it is originated from Upstreams of Nile, Egypt.

 It covers from Central India to the Upstreams of Nile and Ethiopia


along middle East.
Later, it spreads to Persia & Western region of China.

 Safflower is cultivated on a commercial scale mostly in India,


USA, Mexico, Ethiopia, Australia, China, Argentina, Russia and
to a limited extent in Pakisthan, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Iran.

 Safflower occupies 7th place in area
dedicated to oilseeds in India.

 Nearly 99% of area under safflower is located


in southern plateau.

 It is native to Mexico, Central America &


countries of South America.

WORLD

It is a minor crop today, with about 6 lakh tons being


produced commercially in more than sixty countries worldwide.

India, United States, and Mexico are the leading producers,


with Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, China, the Arab World, Argentina and
Australia accounting for most of the remainder.
G.D OVER INDIA

 In India, safflower is grown over an area of 2.95 lakh


ha with a production of 1.89 lakh tonnes (2008-09).

 The average productivity of the crop was 642 kg/ha.

 Maharashtra and Karnataka are the two most


important safflower growing states accounting for 63
and 25% of area and 55 and 31% of production
respectively.
