BACKGROUND
OF THE AUTHOR
Anuradha Roy is an Indian novelist, journalist,
and editor. She was born in 1967 in Kolkata,
India, and grew up mainly in Hyderabad. She
studied Literature at Presidency College,
Kolkata, and at New Hall (now Murray Edwards
College), Cambridge University, UK. Anuradha
Roy has written five novels: “An Atlas of
Impossible Longing” (2008), “The Folded Earth”
(2011), “Sleeping on Jupiter” (2015), “All the Lives
We Never Lived” (2018), and “The Earthspinner”
(2021).
CHARACTERIZATION
Michael- The husband of Maya

The couple name, Maya and Michael got married,

their first few months was full of exultant castaway.
They took so many good-byes before going into
different direction.

Michael lay at night with his eyes open dreaming,
and studied weather report which Maya never heard
of. Michael wasn’t a climber; he’s a press
photographer but they could not afford more than an
annual trek for him in the mountains and that trek
was the reason he lived all year.

Michael decides to go on a trek in Roopkund, a lake in

Himalaya. Michael had tried to reach the Roopkund
once before and he failed because of bad weather
and lack of experience but this time he has a lot of
better equipment and he was timing it differently. As

A news came from the landlord, who had a

telephone. They had found Michael’s body after three
days of searching. It was close to the lake, he had
almost made it there when the landslides, rain, and
snowstorms came and separated Michael from the
others with him.
SETTINGS
The story is set in the town of Ranikhet in the
Indian Himalayas. The novel’s setting plays a
significant role in the narrative, as it reflects the
beauty, tranquility, and complexities of life in a
small Himalayan town. The natural
surroundings, local culture, and the interactions
of the characters with their environment are
integral to the story’s development.
 THEMES
Love&Loss- The story talks about love, the
support that Maya gives to Michael is immense
and the way how she worried about Michael
journey and the love with effort she gives was
undying and Maya loss her love one, Michael
almost made it there but the landslide, rain and
snowstorm suddenly came.
