What is Combing ?

Combing is a method for

preparing carded slivers for
spinning.
The combing section is an
insertion of mostly three
machines into the normal
spinning process between
carding and draw frame.
Description

 Combing aligns fibers in parallel before spinning to produce a smoother, stronger, and more
lustrous yarn. The process of combing is accompanied by gilling, a process of evening out
carded or combed top making it suitable for spinning.
 Combing separates out short fibers by means of a rotating ring or rectilinear row of steel pins.
 In general, there are two main systems of preparing fiber for yarn: the worsted system and
the woolen system. The worsted system is defined by the removal of short fibers by combing
and top preparation by gilling. In the woolen system, short fibers are retained, and it may or
may not involve combing.
 Combing is divided into linear and circular combing.

Tasks of Comber

The comber is used in the production of medium, medium-fine

and fine yarns, and enables a positive influence to be exerted
primarily on the yarn characteristics of:
• evenness;
• strength;
• cleanliness;
and on the fabric characteristics of:
• smoothness;
• visual appearance;
• handle.
Classification of Combing

Depending on the Degree of Combing, combing is divided into the following categories:
 Scratch combing.
 Half combing.
 Ordinary combing.
 Full combing.
 Double combing.

Types of Comber

Different types of comber are available -including:

 Rectilinear combers (with stationary or oscillating nippers, for cotton);

 Circular combers (English worsted process);
 Rotary combers (production of Schappe-spun yarns)
 Hackling machines (bast fibers).

Shortcomings of Combing

 Short term unevenness.

 Hank variations.
 Effect of humidity.
 Higher sliver breaks at coiler.
 Detaching roller lapping.
 Low neps removal efficiency.
 Insertion of additional machineries.
 Increase cost.
 Less production due to its complex design.
