y – intercept (b)
FORM
Two points y - = (x - )
() and () TWO-POINT FORM
Point () y - = m (x - )
Slope (m) POINT-SLOPE FORM
x - intercept (a) + =1
INTERCEPT FORM
y – intercept (b)

x - intercept (a) VERTICAL LINE x=a

y - intercept (b) HORIZONTAL LINE y=b

EXAMPLE: 1
Find the equation of the line parallel to y = 5x – 1 and has a y –
intercept of 3.
Solution:
If the line is parallel to y = 5x – 1, then it has the same slope as this equation.
Substitute the slope and y-intercept in Slope-Intercept Form.
y = mx + b
y = 5x + 3 Slope-Intercept Form

m=5 - 5x + y = 3
b=3 5x - y = -3 Standard Form
EXAMPLE: 2
Find the equation of the vertical line passing
through (2, 3).
Solution:
Since the graph of the line is
vertical, then it means the line
passes through (2, 0).
x – intercept (a) = 2
x=a
x=2
x + 0y Standard
= 2 Form
EXAMPLE: 3
Find the equation of the horizontal line passing
through (2, -4).
Solution:
Since the graph of the line is
horizontal, then it means the line
passes through (0, -4).
y – intercept (b) = -4
y=b
y = -4
0x + y = -4
Standard Form
EXAMPLE: 4
Find the equation of the line perpendicular to
y = 6x + 2 and has a y – intercept of 7.
Solution:
If the line is perpendicular to y = 6x + 2, then its slope is the negative reciprocal of 6.
Substitute the slope and y-intercept in Slope-Intercept Form.

m= y = mx + b
y=x+7 Slope-Intercept Form

b=7 6y = 6+ 6(7)
x + 6y = 42
6y = -1x + 42 Standard Form

PROBLEM: 1
As a cashier of a 24 – hour convenience store, Fiona is paid Php
60 per hour plus an additional Php 500 per week to work in the
evening shift.
a. How much would she be paid for a 40 – hour work week?
for a 48 – hour work week?
Solution:
For a 40 – hour work week:

60 (40) + 500 = 2 400 + 500 = Php 2 900

For a 48 – hour work week:

60 (48) + 500 = 2 880 + 500 = Php 3 380

PROBLEM: 1
As a cashier of a 24 – hour convenience store, Fiona is paid Php
60 per hour plus an additional Php 500 per week to work in the
evening shift.

b. Write a linear equation representing the problem.

Solution:
Let x = the number of hours she works per week
y = the salary she receives per week

60x + 500 = y
PROBLEM: 1
As a cashier of a 24 – hour convenience store, Fiona is paid Php
60 per hour plus an additional Php 500 per week to work in the
evening shift.
c. Graph the relationship between the number of hours she works and her
salary for the week.
Solution: Since number of hours worked and salary can only be represented using positive
integers, we are only going to use Quadrant I to graph the problem.

PROBLEM: 3
A box weighs 100 grams while each bulb weighs 30 grams.

a. How much will a box of bulbs weigh if there are 1 bulb?

3 bulbs? 5 bulbs? 7 bulbs? 10 bulbs? 12 bulbs?
Solution:
For a box with 1 bulb in it: For a box with 7 bulbs in it:
100 + 1 (30) = 130 grams 100 + 7 (30) = 310 grams
For a box with 3 bulbs in it: For a box with 10 bulbs in it:
100 + 3 (30) = 190 grams 100 + 10 (30) = 4000 grams
For a box with 5 bulbs in it: For a box with 12 bulbs in it:
100 + 5 (30) = 250 grams 100 + 12 (30) = 460 grams

PROBLEM: 3
A box weighs 100 grams while each bulb weighs 30 grams.
b. Write a linear equation representing the problem.

Solution: The relationship between the two variables in the problem can be expressed as:

Weight of Total Weight

+ (Number of bulbs) (Weight per bulb) =
the box of the Box

100 + (Number of bulbs) (30) = Total Weight of the Box

100 + 30 x = y
or y = 30x + 100 (slope - intercept form)
