Lesson 1 – Sound and Silence
You live in a world full of
sounds. You hear different
sounds everyday. Some
sounds are pleasing to the
ear while others are not.
You also experience silence
at various times. There is
silence when you are taking
a test or praying when you
wake up in the morning.
Sounds
• Are tones that your ears can hear.
• You hear the chirping of the birds,
the honking of cars on the street,
and the laughter of children in
school.
What is the opposite
of sound?
Silence
• When there is no sound.
• It is important in many places.
• In the classroom, pupils are
expected to keep quiet when
reading or taking notes.
Silence
• In church, people are silent when
praying or listening to sermons.
• In music, silence is important as much
as sound.
• Silence in music is also called rest.
• The symbol or icon | represents
sound in music. The symbol or icon Ƹ
stands for silence in music. Always
use these symbols to represent
sound and silence.
