Direct and Inverse

Proportion
Pre assessment
1) Solve the equation
5/7 = m/ 21

2) Solve the equation

2 x 15 = 5 x k
Learning Objectives
● Identify direct proportion
● Write symbol, eqation , formula for direct proportion
● Solve direct proportion problems
Symbol : x α y
Equation: x = ky (or) x/y = k
Formula : x1/y1 = x2/y2
Identifying direct proportion

Direct Proportion:
If one value increases,
the other value increases.

If one value decreases,

the other value decreases.
Eg : Weight and cost of wheat
Qn : Observe the following tables and find if x and y are directly proportional.

ANS
It is in direct proportion, bcos
(i) both values are increasing
(ii) k = ½ is same

It is not in direct proportion , bcos

k value is not same

It is not in direct proportion , bcos

one value increases but other value
decreases
Solve problems of direct proportion
Qn : An electric pole, 14 metres high, casts a shadow of 10 metres. Find the height of a
tree that casts a shadow of 15 metres under similar conditions.

Soln :

Ht of pole/tree (m) 14 x

Length of shadow (m) 10 15

14/10 = x/15

Find the value of x and write

conclusion in statement
form
Assessment ( CW)
1) A machine in a soft drink factory fills 840 bottles in six hours. How many bottles will
it fill in five hours?
2) A loaded truck travels 14 km in 25 minutes. If the speed remains the same, how far
can it travel in 5 hours?
