Practice Teacher

Good Morning, students!

How are you today?
Direction: Show your complete solution. Perform
the indicated operation.
1. 625 + 81 =
2. 243 − 125 =
3. 2 × 4 × 7 =
4. 9 × 12 =
5. 168 ÷ 7 =
6. 1 3 × 1 4 =
7. 2 3 + 1 2 =
8. 1.5 + 3 =
9. 2.7 − 1.6 =
10. 2.4 × 8.2 =
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. cognitive - describe the exponent and the base in a number
expressed in exponential notation;

b. affective – give the value of numbers expressed in exponential

notation;

c. psychomotor - perform two or more different operations on whole

numbers with or without exponents and grouping symbols.
LESSON
01 EXPONENT AND THE BASE
EXPONENT AND THE BASE

BASE EXPONENT

The value being An exponent is used to express the

number of times a value is
multiplied is called the
multiplied to itself. The exponent is
base. written in the upper right of the
base.
The exponent is written in the
upper right of the base.
Note that if multiplication is
repeated addition, exponent on the
other hand, is repeated
multiplication
Example 1: What is the value of 2 to the power of 5?
Solution: In expanded form, 2 to the power of 5 is written
as the product of five two’s…

2 to the power of 5 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32
Thus, the value of 2 to the power of 5 is 32
Example 2: Find the value of ( 1/2 ) to the
power of 4.
Solution: In the given expression, 1/2 is the base
and 4 is the exponent. This means that we need
to multiply 1/2 by itself four times.
Example 3: What is the value of 0.4 to the 5th power?
Solution: The given expression has 0.4 as its base and 5 as its
exponent.

Thus, we multiply
0.4 five times by itself.
0.4 to the 5th power = 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4
0.4 to the 5th power = 0.01024
The value of 0.4 to the 5th power is 0.01024.
1. Evaluate the given Expressions.
2. Analyze and solve the following problems.
a. Which is bigger—3 to the power of 4 or 4 to the power of 3?
b. A square piece of land is 2.7 meters on one side. What is its total area?
c. A rectangular piece of paper 8 inches by 16 inches long is cut into two
square parts. What is the area of each square?
d. The wall of a cube-shaped swimming pool measures 6 meters on one side.
How much water can it hold when full?
e. A school has a population of 93 students. How many students are studying
in that school
