What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the exponent and exponential notation. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are
now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Describing the Exponent and the Base in a Number
Expressed in Exponential notation.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Describe the exponent and the base in a number expressed in exponential

notation.

Describing the Exponent and
Lesson
the Base in a Number Expressed
1 in Exponential Notation

Multiplication is a mathematical process that gives a result of

combining groups of equal sizes. In other words, multiplication is
repeated addition. In this lesson you will learn how to write large
numbers and small numbers for easier computation. As you go
along in this lesson your skills in multiplying numbers will develop.
It will help you also as we further move to the next level.

What’s In

Now let’s have a drill. Do you still remember how to multiply?

Let’s see. Kindly answer the activity below. If you get a high score
that’s good it will help you understand the lesson on the next page.
Compare your answer in the key to correction on page 16.

1. 100 x 100 =
2. 21 x 21 =
3. 4 x 4 x 4 =
4. 8 x 8 x 8 =
5. 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 =

5
What is It
Look closely to the table.

Let us answer the following questions:

1. 1 - Any nonzero number with a zero exponent is equal to 1.

2. 2x2 - Are the factors same? (Yes)

- What are the factors used? (2)
- How many times is the number used as a factor?
(2times)
- What operation is used? (Multiplication)

3. 2x2x2 - Are the factors same? (Yes)

- What are the factors used? (2)
- How many times is the number used as a factor?
(3times)
- What operation is used? (Multiplication)

4. 3x3 - Are the factors same? (Yes)

- What are the factors used? (3)
- How many times is the number used as a factor?
(2times)
- What operation is used? (Multiplication)

❖ Base tells us the number used as a repeated factor.

❖ Exponent tells us how many times the number base is used as a

factor.

6
Exponent
3
Base 10
- The number 2 is written in normal size, but the number 3 is written
in a smaller size and placed above the right side of number 6
2, this
known as Superscript.

❖ An Exponential expressio n c6onsist of a base and exponent.

2
3 -is exponential expression, because it has base which is 2
and exponent which is the number 3.

❖ Exponential Notation is a way of writing large numbers and small

number for easier computation. It is also called scientific notation.

Example:
On Monday, there were 100 grade 6 pupils who helped the
supreme Government Council (SPG) of the school in preparing for
the family day activities.

- Number 100 is written in standard form; we can also write this

as 102 or 10x10. Exponent is used to write repeated
multiplication.
2
10 -This read as “Ten to the second power or ten squared”

- The expression 102 is called exponential expression or exponential form. The

number 10 is the base and 2 is the exponent. The exponent tells how many
times the base is used as a factor. We can say that 102 is 10x10=100.

7
Study the table below.

Exponential form Read as Expanded form

Four to the third
43 4x4x4=
power or Four cube
Five to the fourth
54 5x5x5x5=
power
Seven to the fifth
75 7x7x7x7x7=
power

-In the first column are expression 43 , 54 , and 75 are in exponential form because, it has base
and exponent. Second column will teach you on how to read the exponential form. Third
column the expanded form, it’s called
expanded form because the base is multiplied repeatedly, and the exponent will tell you on
how many times you multiply the base by itself.

What’s More

Now that you know the process of describing

the exponent and the base in a number expressed in
exponential notation you can now start answering
the activities/exercises.

What’s New

I know that you are a helpful kid. Kindly help Eksponie how to answer
the activity. Give the value of the following expression. The number one is done
for you.

1. 33= 27 2. 82 = 3. 83 =

18
What is It

Exponential form Base Exponent Value

1. 33=
3 3 27
2. 82 =
8 8 64
3. 83 =
8 8 512
4. 10000=
1000 0 1
5. (-11)3=
-11 3 -1,331
6. 101=
10 1 10

1. 33 - 3 is the base or the factor, 3 in smaller size is the

exponent, it tells how many times the base is multiply to
itself.
- 3x3x3 = 27- Product or the Value

2. 82 - 8 is the base or the factor, 2 is written in smaller size is

the exponent, it tells how many times the base is multiply to
itself.
- 8x8= 64 - Product or the Value

3. 83 - 8 is the base or the factor, 3 is written in smaller size is the

exponent, it tells how many times the base is multiply to itself.
- 8x8x8 = 512 – Product or Value

4. 10000 – 1000 is the base or the factor, 0 is the exponent Any

nonzero number with zero exponent is equal to 1.
- 10000 = 1

5. (-11)3 - -11 is the base or the factor, 3 is the exponent. An odd

power of negative number is negative.
- (-11) x (-11) x (-11) = -1,331

6. 101 - 10 is the base or the factor, 1 is the exponent. Any

number with 1 as exponent has a value of the same number.
- 101 = 10

19
Example 1:

(-5)5 = (-5) x (-5) x (-5) x (-5) x (-5) = -3, 125

-5 is used as a factor of 5 times. An odd power of negative number is negative. When a negative
number is raised to odd power the answer will be negative. When a negative number is raised
by a positive power the answer will be positive.

Observe the following expression:

1. 1000 = 10x10x10 = 103

2. 10, 000 = 10x10x10x10 = 104
3. 1, 000, 000 = 10x10x10x10x10x10 = 10 6

- Observe the following equation, the number of zeros are related to the exponent. 1000 has
3 zeros, so 10 is used 3 times as a factor, therefore 1,000
is 103 because 10x10x10 = 1,000.

Example 2:

❖ Any nonzero number with a zero exponent is equal to 1.

Example: 90 = 1
100 =1

❖ Any number with 1 as exponent has a value of the same number.

Example: 101 = 10
51 = 5
Example 3:

Evaluate each expression

If a=4 b=2 c= 5

1. A + b2 =
2. B + c2 =
3. 2a2 =
4. Ab - c2 =
5. A2 b2 -c2 =

20
Solution:

1. A + b2 = 4+22 - Substitute the given values of variables

= 4+4 - Evaluate 22 (2x2=4). Then Add.
=8

2. B + c2 = 2 + 52 - Substitute the given values of the variables.

= 2 + 25 - evaluate 52 (5x5 =25). Then add.
= 27

3. 2a2 = 2(4)2 - Substitute the given values of the variable.

= 2(16) - evaluate 42 (4x4=16). Then multiply.
=32

4. Ab-c2 = (4)(2)-(5)2 - Substitute the given values of the variables

= (8)-(25) - evaluate 52 (5x5=25). Then, multiply and
= -17 subtract

5. A2 b2 -c2 =(4)2 (2)2 – (5)2 - Substitute the given values of the

Variables
(16) (4) – 25 = - evaluate 42 (4x4=16), 22 (2x2=4), 52
(5x5=25). Then multiply and subtract
64 – 25 =
= 39
