How do you read the number 1

followed by 100 zeros?

• The number is called a googol.
• Named by Edward Kasner, American
mathematician, through his nine-year-old
nephew, Milton Sirotta
• A shorter way of writing the googol is
10^100, which is read as “10 raised to the
power of 100” or “10 to the one-hundredth
power". The expression 10^100 is an
example of an expression written in
exponential notation where 100 is the
exponent and 10 is the base. This tells us
that the number 10 is to be multiplied by
itself 100 times.
• How about
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2?

• Is there a shorter way of writing it?

• The expression is read as “five to
the third power” or “five cubed”

• 5 x 5 x 5 = 125.
