This self-learning kit is made for children to know and understand the concepts of
exponents in Mathematics 6.

The primary objective of this SLK is to enhance the child’s skills and understanding
while answering the activities.

At the same time, learners will also become aware of their surroundings and
environment whilst the pandemic of the COVID-19 is happening.

I. WHAT HAPPENED?

Complete the table below.


1. Get a clean sheet of paper. How may rectangles do you see? Record it in the table.
2. Fold the sheet of paper in half. Then unfold it. Count and record it in the table the
number of partitions into which the paper was divided.

II. What you should know
The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication.

It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.

In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64
(The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.)

In words: 82 could be called "8 to the power 2" or "8 to the second power", or simply "8
squared"

Another example: 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125


(The exponent "3" says to use the 5 three times in a multiplication.)

Other names for exponent are index or power.

Exponents make it easier to write and use many multiplications

Example: 96 is easier to write and read than 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9

You can multiply any number by itself as many times as you want using exponents.

3. In a storage warehouse, each container weights   pounds. If there are   


containers, how much do the crates weigh in total?

4. There are  grains of salt in a container of salt. If a large store has   


containers of salt, how many grains of salt do they have?

5. You own a microscope with an objective lens and an eyepiece. The objective
lens can magnify an object   times, and the eyepiece can further magnify an
object   times. What is the maximum magnification on your microscope?
6. A car travels at a speed   miles per hour, how long will the car travel in   
days?
