ROBERT K. GREENLEAF
• Robert K. Greenleaf (1904–1990) was an American organizational theorist,
management consultant, and educator. He is best known for developing the
concept of "servant leadership," which has had a profound impact on
leadership philosophy and practice.
• Greenleaf was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1904.
• He graduated from Carleton College in 1926 and later earned a master's
degree in business from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
• Greenleaf was an AT&T executive who later devoted himself to the study of
leadership and organizational behavior. Inspired by Eastern philosophy,
literature, and the Quaker tradition.
• In 1970, Greenleaf published his essay "The Servant as Leader," where he
introduced the concept of servant leadership.This essay marked the formal
beginning of the modern servant leadership movement.
