MECHANISM

OF
EVOLUTION
OVERVIEW

• MUTATION
• GENE FLOW
• GENETIC DRIFT
• NATURAL SELECTION
• SPECIES DEVELOPMENT
PROCESS QUESTION???

• "How do genetic mutations contribute to

the mechanism of evolution, and what
role do they play in the adaptation of
species to changing environments?"
WHAT IS MECHANISM OF
EVOLUTION?

• It is the process of evolution, the

mechanisms of evolution focus mainly
on mutation, genetic drift, gene flow,
and natural selection.

MUTATION
5 MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION

• 1. MUTATION

• It is a change in the nature of the DNA in one

or more chromosomes.
5 MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION
• 2. GENE FLOW/MIGRATION
• When organism migrate, they interbreed with the new
population and contribute their genes to the gene pool of
the local population.
• Gene pool-refers to the combination of all the genes
(including alleles) present in a reproducing population or
species.
5 MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION

• 3. NATURAL SELECTION

• a mechanism of evolution,organisms that are

more adapted to their environment are more
likely to survive and pass on the genes that aided
their success.
5 MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION

• 4. GENETIC DRIFT
• Genetic drift is the change in frequency of an
existing gene variant in the population due to
random chance.
5. SPECIES DEVELOPMENT

• Speciation is an evolutionary process by which a new

species comes into being. A species is a group of
organisms that can reproduce with one another to
produce fertile offspring and is reproductively isolated
from other organisms.
ACTIVITY 2: THINK PAIR AND
SHARE
• CHOOSE ONE PARTNER FOR THIS
ACTIVITY, AND CHOOSE 1 OUT OF 5
MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION TO
DISCUSS INFRONT OF THE CLASS,
AND ALSO GIVE SOME EXAMPLE.
ASSESSMENT:
• 1. EXPLAIN 5 MECHANISM OF EVOLUTION
• 2. DIFFERENTIATE BOTTLE NECK AND CO- FOUNDER EFFECT
IN GENETIC DRIFT.
