Main Sources of Data for
Population Outcomes
• At the national level
• Census
• Vital Registration System
• Sample Surveys
• At the local level
• Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS)
• Local census/surveys
• Mapping and profiling by community volunteers
• Local registration system (e.g. LCR)
• Other local information system
Population Size
• Refers to the total population of a particular size,
locality or territory at a specific time period
• Determining the population size of a certain area
involves the actual count of the persons in that area
through a census
• Can be disaggregated by sex, age, geographical
location, and other characteristics
Population Size
• Refers to the total population of a particular size,
locality or territory at a specific time period
• Determining the population size of a certain area
involves the actual count of the persons in that area
through a census
• Land-based Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are
included in the total count as long as they fall within the
a cut-off reference period (usually 5 years)
• Seafarers are included in the total population count
Population Size
• Possible disaggregation
• Population by geographic distribution
• By region, province, city, municipality, barangay
• By urban-rural divide or by type of eco-systems
• By age, sex, and other socio-economic
characteristics
• By household or institutional population
Population Size Indicators
• Total population (number)
• Total or percentage/proportion of population by sex and
age group
• Total population by geographic area
• Percent of population living in the urban and rural areas
• Total household population
• Average size of household
Population Growth Rate
• The rate at which the population is increasing or
decreasing due to natural increase and net migration
• Ways of estimating population growth rates
• ARITHMETIC (constant amount of increase per unit
of time)
• GEOMETRIC (increments or decreases are
compounded over a specified period )
• EXPONENTIAL (takes into account semi-annual or
monthly compounding)
Doubling Time
• The length of time a particular population would take to
double its size under a given growth rate.
• It has been found out that a population growing at least
at the rate of one (1) percent annually double its size in
69. 3 years.
• A quick way to estimate doubling time is to divide 69.3
by the growth rate expressed in percent

DOUBLING TIME = 69.3

PGR
Rate of Natural Increase (RNI)
• The rate at which the population is increasing or
decreasing in a given year due to the surplus or
deficit of births over deaths expressed as a
percentage of the base population

RNI = Births - Deaths X 100

Population Pyramid
• Graphical presentation of the age-sex composition of the
population.
• It consists of bars: the height represents the age groups
while the length represents the absolute population, or
percent of the population in each age group
• The sum of bars is equal to the total population or 100%
of the population
• The graph usually depicts the male and female population
separately; bars for males are given on the left of the x-
axis and the bars for females are on the right x-axis.

Population Distribution
POPULATION DENSITY - refers to the number of
persons per unit of land area (in square kilometers).

Population density = Number of Population

Area (in square kilometers)
Example:
population = 89,199 people
land area= 85.98 square kilometer
population density = 89, 199/85.98
= 1,037.49 persons per km2

Crude Birth rate (CBR)

• Why “crude”?
• Because its denominator includes people who
are not risk of giving birth (e.g. women beyond
reproductive age and men)

Average Number of Children Ever Born

• Derived by asking the women the number of children
they ever had
• Usually tabulated by woman’s age yielding
cumulative fertility of women up to specified points in
their childbearing years
• Limitations:
• Measures past fertility
• Children who died young might not be
remembered
• Source: Census

Migration
Indicators
Migration
• Migration is the movement of people into or out of a
geographic area for the purpose of establishing new
permanent residence in the area by destination,
crossing a defined territorial boundary
• It can involve movement within the country (internal)
and across national borders (international)
• The most difficult to measure because it is not normally
recorded
Migration
• Time reference
• Lifetime migration
• Current area of residence is different from
the area of birth
• Period Migration
• Current area of residence is different from
residence in a specified period prior to
enumeration (e.g. 5 years ago)
