Measurements
Keith Joshua A. Calimlim
Population Studies: Mortality
• Mortality is a measure of individual deaths in a population

• Mortality is an important demographic parameter that affects population growth.

• When the mortality is higher than the birth rate, the population will decrease.
a. Crude death rate

b. Age-specific death rates

e. Life expectancy
Crude death rate

• The number of deaths in a population during a given period, divided by the total
population and expressed per 1,000.

• Crude Death Rate = (Number of deaths in each period) / (Population size) * 1000

The global crude death rate in 2020 was 8.4 deaths per 1,000 people. This
means that an estimated 60 million people died in 2020.
• Death rates calculated separately for different age
Age-specific groups.

rates of 2020:

Infant • The number of deaths of infants under one
year of age per 1,000 live births.

mortality
rate • In 2020, the global infant mortality rate was
27.974 deaths per 1,000 live births
• The number of deaths of children under five
years of age per 1,000 live births.

Under-five • The global under-five mortality rate in 2020

mortality was 37 deaths per 1000 live births.

rate • This means that an estimated 5 million

children under the age of 5 died in 2020.
• The average number of years that a person is
expected to live, given their current age and
sex.

Life
expectancy • The global life expectancy in 2020 was 73.4 years.
This means that the average person born in 2020 is
expected to live for 73.4 years.
