Claims
A claim is an arguable statement. It is an opinion that a writer
asks an audience to accept.
THREE TYPES OF CLAIMS IN WRITTEN TEXTS.

1. Claim of fact
 this
claim is a statement that reports, describes, or predicts whether
something is a settled fact.
 it is grounded on reliable authority such as science or history.

Example:
The closing of Philippine borders to tourists is one way to slow down
the spread of COVID-19.

isthe argument where actions should be carried out. Basically, it
is perceived as a relatively direct statement. This claim can also
be called claim of solution because it suggests and supports
policies and solutions, and the action to be taken is based on
the results. You will know if a statement is a claim of policy if
there is an action to be done or a solution to be taken.
Example:
Censorship in the Philippines must be strengthened.

Spreading fake news in the midst of pandemic will not help at


all; hence, by all means it should be stopped.
 3. Claim of value
itis also called claim of judgment because the reader
has to decide whether the argument or proposition is
right or wrong or has to be accepted or rejected. If the
argument challenges the decision making or judgment
leading to acceptance or rejection of the reader, then it is
considered to be a claim of value.

Example:
Bullying will never be right.

Stem cell research is wrong.


Task: “Signal Your Claims!”

Analyze each sentence below. Identify whether it is a claim of Fact,


Value or Policy. Use the following hand signals to show your
answer.

1. Criminal liability age must be lowered from 15 to 9 years of age.


2. Extra-judicial killing is morally unacceptable.
3. Climate Change has already become an issue in the country.
4. Living in the province is better than living in the city.
5. The PBO industry should hire single individuals.
Task: The Hall of “Claimer” Challenge

 An issue through an image/infographic will be presented to the


class.
 There should be a representative per issue.
 He/She shall present his/her claims based on the flashed issue.
 Thespeaker must be able to compose & express his/her claims in
two minutes.
 The class shall choose the Hall of “Claimer”.

and as a writer.
Task: Highlight it!

Read the paragraph and identify the type of claims presented in it.
Use colors to highlight each claim. (Fact- blue/ Value- red/ Policy-
green)

Childhood obesity in our country has more than tripled in the


past 30 years. Today, one in six children in our country is obese.
This is unacceptable. As parents, we try to provide a better future
for our children, better than we’ve ever had. We need to stand up
and do what we can. We can start by supporting the passing of the
anti-junk food bill in schools and other child-friendly areas.
