Volcanic Eruptions
Volcanoes are known to be the
sleeping giants. Some may be
dangerous because of its
eruptive nature.
In relation to person’s feelings
and emotions, a person can
also burst out its anger in
certain circumstances.
1. What will you do to
manage/control your
anger?
2. How will you protect
yourself from
violence/harm?
What is a Volcano?
▪ Volcano – is an
opening or vent on
the earth’s surface
where molten rocks,
gases, and ashes are
ejected.

Anatomy of a Volcano
 Crater – opening of
a volcano.
 Pipe – path through
which the ejected
materials pass.
Anatomy of a Volcano
▪ Sill is a flat piece of rock formed
when magma hardens in a
crack in a volcano.
▪ The vent is an opening in
Earth’s surface through which
volcanic materials escape.
▪ The side of a volcano is called
flank.
Anatomy of a Volcano
▪ A conduit is an underground passage
magma travels through while throat is
the conduit that ejects lava and
volcanic ash.
▪ Ash are fragments of lava or rock
smaller than 2 mm in size that are
blasted into the air by volcanic
explosions.
▪ Ash clouds are clouds of ash formed
by volcanic explosions.
Where does the Philippines located? The Philippines
is located in the
Pacific Ring of
Fire, an area in
the Pacific
Ocean where
many volcanic
eruptions and
earthquakes
occur

Eruptions occur when underground
Add a Slide Title - 5 pressure is released when blocks of the
earth’s crust shift. Steam and gases
from magma in the earth create
bubbles that expand and burst when the
pressure
above them is lessened. These bubbles
usually burst with a tremendous force
that along with escaping gas comes
magma too.
What happens when volcanoes erupt?

• Eruptions occur when underground pressure is

released when blocks of the earth’s crust shift.
• Steam and gases from magma in the earth create
bubbles that expand and burst when the pressure
above them is lessened.
• These bubbles usually burst with a tremendous
force that along with escaping gas comes magma
too.
Why volcanoes actually erupt?

• Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called

magma rises to the surface. Magma is
formed when the earth's mantle melts.
• Melting may happen where tectonic plates
are pulling apart or where one plate is
pushed down under another.
What are the preventive measures
that we can do in case of volcanic
eruptions in the vicinity?
Activity No. 10
I LAVA YOU
OBJECTIVES:
• Describe what happens when a volcano erupts.
MATERIALS: 2 Small dishpan/basin, 2 empty bottles, baking
powder, dishwashing liquid, white vinegar, red food coloring,
water, aluminum foil, old news papers, masking tape, scissors
PROCEDURE:
1. Put small amount of baking soda in an empty bottle.
2. Place the empty bottle as a model volcano on top of a small
dishpan/basin.
3. Cover the sides of the bottle with the aluminum foil and old
newspapers (paint it with brown) to make it look like a volcano.
Leave the opening at the top.
*Different tasks (Leader, Writers, Discussants, Timekeepers)
4. In a separate container, mix the vinegar, dishwashing liquid,
water and food coloring.
5. Now set the “volcano” at the center of your table. Pour the
vinegar solution into the “volcano” very slowly.

*Different tasks (Leader, Writers, Discussants, Timekeepers)

Q1. What did you observe after pouring the vinegar?

Q2. Why did the “volcano” model erupt? Which chemicals reacted?

Q3. What combination of vinegar and baking soda creates the biggest
eruption?

*Different tasks (Leader, Writers, Discussants, Timekeepers)

Quiz
Directions: Arrange the statements about the events that
takes place during volcanic eruption in their correct
sequence. Write numbers A-E on a ¼ sheet of paper.
___1. When the pressure exceeds the strength of the
overlying rock, fracturing occurs.
__2. The gas bubbles are trapped and expanded causing the
molten material to swell.
__3. As the magma is continuously heated, it goes up.
__4. As it rises, gas bubbles are developed.
__5. Eventually, lava and other volcanic materials are ejected.
