b. Motivating Volunteers

c. Motivating Volunteers
We have a need– a critical need– to motivate others
Perhaps 99% of everything we do is habit. Much of the motivation process involves
changing someone’s habits.

Key to that is substitution of a better habit pattern, by showing a better way…

The core of motivation is meeting needs.

Meeting Needs of your Pathfinder Clubs in West Rand District: Identify Gaps

Physiological Needs
Safety Needs
Belonging Needs
Control Needs
Individual Needs
Potential Needs
Change Needs
If needs are met = totally satisfaction = self-motivated
Minimax : minimize weaknesses and maximize strengths in people.
Frederick Herzberg, a behavioral scientist,’s two factors that most
influence people’s opinions regarding their work:-

Motivation
Maintenance.

Motivation Factors

Absence of motivation factors will decrease of motivation

Achievement : People need to feel that they have accomplished something.
Recognition : People need to feel that thier achievement has been noticed.
Interesting Duties :The work must be interesting
Responsibility: Responsibility for new tasks and duties is important.
Growth Opportunity: Is there potential to grow?
Maintenance Factors–

These keep staff on the job.; their absence causes dissatisfaction.

However these have little direct impact on motivation.

Supervision : A leader should be willing to teach and delegate responsibility

Administration : Good communication from leadership is important

Working conditions : Staff feels good about physical conditions of work
