 Forest product technology is a science that studies
various types, ways of processing (technology)
forest products, including to know the basics of
science and application in technology.

 Forest product technologies include:

1. WOOD TECHNOLOGY
2. NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCT
TECHNOLOGY
 Wood technology
includes Wood
Identification, Wood
Anatomy (Structure),
Wood Properties
(Physical, Chemical,
and Mechanical
Properties), Wood
Defects, Wood
Variability, Pickling,
and Drying, and so on.

 UNDERSTANDING :
WOOD IS A MATERIAL (RAW-MATERIAL)
WHICH COMES FROM THE METABOLIC
PROCESS OF LIVING ORGANISMS, WOODY
PLANTS IN THE FORM OF TREES (BIO-
MATERIAL).

Not all plants can produce wood.

Features of woody plants?
 CHARACTERISTICS OF WOODY PLANTS

 Woody plants must be

vascular plants
 The must be parennial
plants
 The must posses a steam
that persits form year to
year
 Must be able to do
secondary thickening (the
stem increases in size so it
must have cambium)
 TYPES OF WOODY PLANTS

1. A tree is a woody plant that when mature

in a natural place (nature) must be able to
reach a minimum height of 20 feet (6-7
meters)

2. A shrub is a woody plant with a height

below 20 feet

3. Liana (a woody liana) vine plant (eg:

rattan)
 GENERAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD

 Renewable resources
 Easy-to-process materials
 It has specific properties (strong, elastic,
ductile) with a distinctive pattern and color.
 Hygroscopic and anisotropic
 Can burn and be attacked by wood-
destroying organisms
 GENERAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD

 Wood is hygroscopic, namely wood that binds

and releases water according to the
temperature and relative humidity of the
surrounding air

 Wood is anisotropic, that is, wood has different

properties from all three planes (radial,
tangential and longitudinal)
