IMPORTANCE OF DIALECTS IN PRESERVING CULTURE

 DIALECTS- A dialect is a form of the language that is spoken in a


particular part of the country or by a particular group of people.
 IMPORTANCE-
 Dialects are an important marker of culture and a means of preserving and
understanding cultural identity.
 Dialects are often highly valued by speakers and their preservation is
desired.
 Preserving dialects contributes to the preservation of cultural diversity.
INTRODUCTION TO GEORDIE DIALECT

The Geordie dialect is a vibrant and


distinctive dialect that offers a fascinating
glimpse into the vibrant culture of the
Tyneside region, particularly Newcastle
and its surroundings. Encompassing a
distinctive dialect with its unique
vocabulary and expressions, the Geordie
dialect is a testament to the resilience and
identity of its people.
THE ORIGINS OF THE GEORDIE DIALECT

TERM: The term Geordie generally refers to a native of Newcastle-upon-


Tyne, also called Tyneside. However, the term is used sometimes in
connection with the whole of North East England.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The Geordie dialect started to develop after the Romans left Britain in the 5 th
century and the Anglo-Saxons started invading Britain. The Geordie dialect
has evolved over centuries, influenced by a blend of Old English, Norse, and
Scottish languages.
FEATURES OF GEORDIE DIALECT
 PRONUNCIATION
One of the most distinctive features of the Geordie accent is its pronunciation.
Geordie speakers often exhibit a unique way of pronouncing certain sounds and
words.
 VOCABULARY
The Geordie accent has a rich vocabulary that sets it apart from other dialects.
Locals use a range of unique words and phrases that may be unfamiliar to outsiders.
 INTONATION
Geordie speakers have a distinctive intonation that adds to the charm of the accent.
The accent is known for its rising and falling inflections, which give the speech a
melodic quality.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
 CULTURAL DIVERSITY: The Geordie dialect holds immense cultural significance for
the people of Newcastle and the wider Tyneside region. It reflects the cultural diversity of
the region and helps to promote a greater understanding of culture.
 PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: The Geordie dialect is an integral
part of the local identity, representing a shared heritage and a sense of community. The
dialect often contains words and expressions that are specific to a certain region or
culture, and they can serve as a way to preserve and transmit cultural heritage.
 EXPRESSION OF IDENTITY: The Geordie dialect is an important aspect of
individual and collective identity, and it also serves as an expression of resistance against
dominant cultures or languages through its unique vocabulary and expression

Although much of this literature is conservative in nature and conservationist
in intent, more recent examples in the local and popular press attempt to
represent the salient features of the Geordie dialect. Such as –
