Introduction to Adama-II wind farm

 Adama-II Wind Farm is located in the southeastern part of the country, 95

km from Addis Ababa and 7 km from Adama town.
In this wind farm there are 102 turbines and the rated capacity of each
turbine, 1.5 MW.
The installed power capacity of the farm is 153 MW with two transformers
each with rated capacity of 90 MVA .
Each turbine generates 690V and this voltage level is stepped up in to 33kV
using step up transformer.
Also the 33kV is stepped up to 230kV and the outgoing line is connected to
the Koka switch yard (Substation) through a single circuit overhead line.

Types of Wind generator

Type 1: Fixed Speed (Induction

Generator) Wind Turbine
Generator operates at fixed speed due to
its direct grid connection.
 No reactive power control capability,
Additional devices required.
Advantages: Cheap price, simple
design and robustnes.
Disadvantages: controllability
relatively poor (P and Q)
fig.1. Type 1 wind generator

4
Type 2: Variable Speed Wind Turbine (Induction Generator)
with Variable Rotor Resistance

Turbine setup is same as for Type 1

but,Wound rotor induction generator
(WRIG) with external rotor resistance
for variable speed.
 Higher slip by external rotor
resistance, variable speed operation
but increasing losses
Pitch control is used for limitation of
aerodynamic power above rated wind
speed.
Advantages: Simple concept for fig.2. Type 2 wind generator
variable speed operation.
Disadvantages: Reactive power
compensation requirements. 5
Type 3 : Doubly-fed induction generator wind turbine

Pitch-controlled aerodynamic rotor is

coupled via gearbox to the generator.
Doubly-fed induction generator
(DFIG) provides variable speed
operation by partial-scale frequency
converter in the rotor.
Advantages: No reactive power
compensation required, Full control of
active and reactive power.
Disadvantages: Crow bar may be
needed for severe faults →no reactive
power control during connected crow
bar.

Type 4: Variable speed wind turbine with full-scale converter

Generator connected to a full-scale

frequency converter.
Guarantee of reactive power
compensation and smooth grid
connection by the converter.
Advantages: No reactive power
compensation required, Full control
of active and reactive power.
Disadvantages: Frequency converter
rating 100% of rated power (more
expensive, more losses. fig.4. Type 4 wind generator

Components of Adama-II wind farm

Rotor
• The rotor is the rotating part of a turbine.
It consists of three blades and the central part that the blades are
attached to the hub.
• Hub

• Is used to hold the blades and make it possible for them to rotate with
respect to the rest of the turbine body.
8
Cont...

• Nacelle

• Nacelle is housing on top of the tower that accommodates all the

components that need to be on a turbine top.

• Generator

• Is the component that converts the mechanical energy of the rotor, harnessed

from wind to electrical energy.

Farm

The wind blade rotates with 19rev/min due to this low speed,
Gear box is connected on the low speed shaft side to increase
the speed of the blade to 1800rev/min.
 Yaw system changes the turbine in to wind direction.
Also the farm uses manually and hydraulic breaking
mechanisms.

In the SCADA system there are four indication colors. These

are,
Red color indicates fault,
 Yellow color indicates maintenance ,
 Green color indicates the turbine is functioning and
Silver color indicates the turbine did not get enough air.
Adama wind farm II uses Double Feed Induction Generators
(DFIG) because they can supply power both in stator and
rotor sides.
14
Conclusion

The installed power capacity of the farm is 153 MW with two

transformers each with rated capacity of 90 MVA .
Type 4: Variable speed wind turbine with full-scale converter is more
accurate but, more expenssive type of wind generator and type 1 is cheap
and simple dessign.
Scada System is a computer program that is used to control the wind
turbines.
