“ YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”

NUTRITION
It is the science that deals
with the process of taking
food and using it for
growth, metabolism, and
repair.
NUTRIENTS
Are chemical compounds in
food which are essential in
life and health, providing us
with energy, building blocks
for repair and growth and
substances necessary to
regulate chemical process.
TWO TYPES
OF
NUTRIENTS

MACRONUTRIENTS MICRONUTRIENTS
MACRONUTRIENTS
Are vitamins and minerals
needed by the body in very
small amounts. However, their
impact on a body's health is
critical, and deficiency in any of
them can cause severe and
even life-threatening
conditions.
MICRONUTRIENTS
Are the nutrients we need in
larger quantities that provide us
with energy, fat, protein and
carbohydrate. Micronutrients are
mostly vitamins and minerals,
and are equally important but
consumed in very small
amounts.
NUTRIENTS THAT
OUR BODY NEEDS
CARBOHYDRATES

Substances, found in certain

kinds of food that provide
you with energy.
PROTEINS
They are the basis of
body structures, such as
skin and hair, and of
other substances such as
enzymes, cytokines, and
antibodies.
FATS
The most concentrated
form of food energy
(calories).
VITAMINS
Vitamins help your
body grow and work
the way it should be.
Vitamins are essential
nutrients, required in
small amounts.
MINERALS
Required for growth,
maintenance and
reproduction.
WATER
Water is used by the
body as a medium to
transport gases,
nutrients, and waste
products.
A healthy well-balanced diet is important
for the whole body.
The amount of food you eat depends on
your age, size, and energy requirements.
