CONJUNCTIONS
 The main job of a conjunction is to link
different parts of a sentence. They make
things go together. They join words, phrases,
and independent clauses.
7 Coordinating Conjunctions
(FANBOYS)
1. For – Explains reason or purpose
Ex. I go to the park every Sunday for the fresh air
2. And- Adds one thing to another
Ex. My favorite hobbies are singing and writing.
 3. Nor – Used to present an alternative idea
to an already stated negative idea
 4. But – shows contrast
 5. Or- presents an alternative or a choice
 6. Yet- introduces a contrasting idea that
follows the preceding idea logically
 7. So- Indicates effect or consequence
 Coordinating Conjunction is the simplest
connector among the three because we can use it in
any independent sentences or clause.
 If a Coordinating Conjunction is joining together
two independent clauses ,it needs to have a comma
with it
 If the Conjunction is connecting two phrases or
words, it does not need a comma
Subordinating Conjunction
 Always introduces a dependent clause, tying it to
an independent clause. The clauses can go in any
order; that is, the independent or the dependent
clause can come first in the sentence, but in either
order, the first word of the dependent(or
subordinate)clause will be the subordinating
conjunction.
1. I was reading while my dog was eating its dinner.
2. I’m studying because I got to learn things.
3. It was silence before the storm .
4. You don’t know what you got until its gone.
Correlative Conjunction
 Come in pairs, and you have to use both of them in
different places in a sentence to make them work
1. I want either the cheesecake or the hot chocolate.
2. I’ll have both the cheesecake and the hot
chocolate.
3. I see you’re in the mood not only for desserts but
also appetizers.

1. She slept quickly at night because she had a headache.
2. She was looking gorgeous when she was in Manila.
3. They rushed to the hospital but they were too late.
4. I was feeling hungry, so I made myself a sandwich.
5. She is both intelligent and beautiful.
6. Jerry is neither rich nor famous.
7. He is not only intelligent, but also very funny.
8. Alex was late for work , and he received a cut in pay.
9. I like coffee, but I don’t like tea.
10. You can eat your cake with a spoon or fork.
