Group of twenty(G20)

1) Group of twenty known as G20 is a forum for international economic cooperation.

2) India has assumed its presidency on 1st December 2022 and will hold it till 30th nov 2023.

3) The G20 was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for the financial ministers
and central bank governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.

4) Group of 20 was strengthened and upgrated to the level of Heads of state and during the global
financial crisis of 2007 and got designated as the ‘premier forum for the international economic
cooperation’.
Who are G20 members?

 The members of G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France,
Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi
Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and the European Union.
 The countries are from across the world and these members represent around 85% of
the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world
population. This is why G20 is an important organization from the current economic,
political and socio-cultural contexts as every country endeavors to enable themselves
to economic develop and be a self-sustaining country inn the context of globalization.
When did India joined G20 ?
 India will assume the G20 presidency on 1 st December 2022 from Indonesia, and will
convene the G20 Leaders' Summit for the first time in India in 2023. Italy hosted the G20
summit during October 30-31, 2021 where India had raised the issue of Afghanistan's
future following the takeover by the Taliban.

What is India’s role in G20 ?


As a strong advocate of free trade, India can work with other G20 countries to promote a
more open and inclusive trading system that benefits all countries, particularly developing
economies.
What is the theme of India's G20
presidency in 2023?
 One Earth, One Family, One Future
Under the Indian Presidency, the G20 in 2023 will focus on the theme, 'One Earth, One
Family, One Future'.

 MEANING OF G20 LOGO :- G20 LOGO has been designed to convey the essence and the
indigeneous wisdom of India. You can see below as it depicts the overcharging vision of
human existence ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam, the World is one family.
 G20 website g20.org was recently launched by Hounarable Prime Minister of India, Shri
Narendra Modi ji.
 “The lotus in the logo of G-20 is a symbol of hope in such tough times,” he
said. The Prime Minister remarked that even if the world is in a deep crisis,
we can still progress to make it a better place.

AGENDA OF G20

The G20 Summit is held annually, under the leadership of a rotating Presidency. The
G20 initially focused largely on broad macroeconomic issues, but it has since
expanded its agenda to inter-alia include trade, sustainable development, health,
agriculture, energy, environment, climate change, and anti-corruption.

India's G20 presidency will be aimed at boosting digital transformation which will
include digital economy, digital education, digital health, digital government, and
digital finance. India will work towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring that
everyone has access to digital technology

How does the G20 work?

 The G20 Presidency steers the G20 agenda for one year and hosts the
Summit. The G20 consists of two parallel tracks: the Finance Track and
the Sherpa Track. Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors lead
the Finance Track, while Sherpas lead the Sherpa Track.

secretariat and is supported by the previous, current, and future holders
of the presidency, known as the troika.

 About the LiFE Campaign
 Environmental degradation and climate change are global phenomena
where actions in one part of the world impact ecosystems and
populations across the globe. Estimates suggest that if requisite action
is not taken against the changing environment, approximately 3 billion
people globally could experience chronic water scarcity. The global
economy could lose up to 18% of GDP by 2050.
India’s G20 Precidencies
 India will convene the G20 Leaders' Summit for the first time in 2023, as 43 Heads of Delegations- the largest
ever in the G20–will participate in the final New Delhi Summit in September later this year. As a nation committed
to democracy and multilateralism, India's presidency will be a significant milestone as it seeks to find practical
global solutions for the benefit of all and embody the idea of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," or "the world is one
family."
 The G20 Summit is held annually with a rotating presidency, and in 2023, India will hold the presidency. The
group does not have a permanent secretariat and is supported by the previous, current, and future holders of the
presidency, known as the troika. In 2023, the troika consists of Indonesia, Brazil, and India.
 This summit will conclude a series of meetings throughout the year, with potential host cities for meetings from
December 2022 to February 2023 including Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Indore, Jodhpur,
Khajuraho, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, Rann of Kutch, Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, and Udaipur.
 Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to "One Earth, One Family, One Future," is the theme of India's G20
presidency. It is inspired from the Maha Upanishad, an old Sanskrit scripture. The theme fundamentally
highlights the importance of all life—human, animal, plant, and microorganism—as well as their interdependence
on Earth and across the universe. The theme also exemplifies LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which highlights
the importance of environmentally sustainable and responsible lifestyle choices, both at the individual and
national level, in creating a cleaner, greener, and bluer future.
 The G20 Presidency also heralds for India the start of "Amritkaal," a 25-year period commencing from the 75th
anniversary of its independence on August 15, 2022, leading up to the centenary of its independence
 What are G20 Initiatives and Activities ?

G20 brings together the world’s major developed and developing economies, making it a
premium forum for International economic cooperation. Let us understand a bit more. This
is a forum which binds the developed and developing economies in order to mutually benefit
from one another. In a way bthis forum attempts to reduce the inequality and disparity
among the world economies.
Government of india has initiated many activities, during its precidency
“JAN BHAGIDARI” activities are planned throughout the year.
The Hornbill festival is held in Kohima during December 2022 when India took over the
precidency of G20 featured a special focus on G20.
