WHY IS RESEARCH IMPORTANT?

• You are the front desk supervisor at a hotel. You are told that one of your team is
to be fired because they were falsifying reports. Your teammate comes up to you
and says that they need to you help them save their job. They just thought that
the reports were unimportant and that it was no big deal. They learned their
lesson and will not do it again?
• Do you go to your bosses and plead their case?
• If the boss told you that they could stay but if they did it again you would be fired too, would you still
stand up for them?
8

WHY ARE DECISIONS INTEGRAL?

• Your co-worker comes to you saying that they are up for a new job but need a reference.
You know that this person stretches the truth a lot and often has other people do their work
for them. Are you willing to be their reference?

WHICH
LEADERSHIP STYLE
TO CHOOSE?
THREE CASES
• For each of the three cases below, note
1. Define the issue for each case.
2. Which leadership style do you believe that would be the most effective in addressing the
issues.
 What actions would you take in this situation adopting this leadership style.
 Why do you feel that particular leadership style would be the most appropriate. What are the
pros and cons for adopting your chosen style.
• You are a recently promoted housekeeping manager.
You have been told that your housekeeping team has
consistently not met productivity standards. Your
boss has informed you that you have a month to
CASE ONE address the lack of productivity.
• You meet with the staff and morale is low (even could
be described as toxic) and many of the housekeeping
team have been on the job for years.
• You are the leader of a front line team. Most of you
team are still in high school or year one or two of
university. You are noticing that you are getting a lot
of last minute sick call-ins from more and more of
CASE TWO your staff often leaving your scheduled working team
understaffed. You notice the motivation of your team
to do a good job is waning. People really are not
starting to care about their work.
• You have heard from your leadership that layoffs are
upcoming but have been told not to share that
information to the team. Knowing what is coming
you have been quietly on the job market. One of your
CASE THREE team has ‘heard’ that you are actively searching for a
new position and the rumour has made it all around
your team. They are all wondering, why you are on
the market and getting very nervous.
