4. clouds — a visible mass of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals that
are above the earth’s surface

Meteorology
Etymology. [1610] From French météorologie, from Ancient
Greek μετέωρος (metéōros, “high in the sky”) + -λογία (-logía).
Surface etymology is meteor (“atmospheric phenomenon”) + -logy
(“study of”)

Meteorology

The term "meteorology" seems to have originated in 340 BC when the Greek
philosopher Aristotle wrote a book on natural philosophy entitled
Meteorologica.

Meteorology

This work presented the philosophical knowledge of the atmosphere at that

time and included topics such as clouds and mist, rain, snow, wind, hail,
lightning and thunder, and climatic changes.

Meteorology
In addition, topics such as astronomy, geography and chemistry were also
addressed. The manuscript was entitled Meteorologica because in those
times, any particle which fell from the sky, or was suspended in the
atmosphere, was called a meteor.

Meteorology

Today, we distinguish between "meteors" (extraterrestrial meteoroids) and

"hydrometeors" (particles of water or ice in the atmosphere).

History of Meteorology
1. Aristotle - 340 b.c., wrote a book on natural philosophy entitled
Meteorologica
2. Invention of weather instruments;
• Thermometer - at the end of the sixteenth century
• Barometer - 1643
• Hygrometer - late 1700s.
• Telegraph - 1843
• Weather maps with isobars - 1869
• Concepts on air masses and weather fronts - 1920
• Use of upper-air balloon and discovery of jet streams- 1940s
• High speed computers - 1950s
• Weather Satellite (Tiros I) - 1960s
• Doppler radars - mid-1990s

Isobar Rules

Isobars are lines of equal atmospheric pressure drawn on a meteorological

map. Each line passes through a pressure of a given value, provided certain
rules are followed.

The rules for drawing isobars are:

1.Isobar lines may never cross or touch.
2.Isobar lines may only pass through pressures of 1000 + or - 4. In other
words, allowable lines are 992, 996, 1000, 1004, 1008, and so on.
3.The atmospheric pressure is given in millibars (mb). One millibar = 0.02953
inches of mercury.
4.Pressure lines are usually corrected for sea level so any differences in
pressure due to altitude are ignored.
