Philippine Theater Groups

• PETA was founded in 1967 by Cecile-Guidote Alvarez. Its members are focused on
pursuing exceptional aesthetics in theater and education with the goal of empowering the
Filipino people and Philippine society.
• PETA has won numerous awards. Some of these are Gawad Buhay Awards, Aliw
Awards, Japan Foundation Special Awards for Culture, Gawad Alab ng Haraya, Star
Awards, Bahaghari Awards, and Young Critics Circle.

• Repertory Philippines was founded in 1967 by Zenaida Amadr, Carmen Barredo, Leo
Martinez, and Tony and Monina Mercado. They all wanted to create an opportunity for
fellow Filipino actors to showcase their talent and make a living in the theater industry.
• They produced at least five productions with approximately 150 performances every year.
For almost 50 years, it has produced excellent adaptations of classics, comedies, dramas,
and musicals.

• Triumphant People’s Evangelistic Theater Society (Trumpets) was founded in 1990


by Audie Gemora as a gospel theater company aimed at staging religious productions. Its
mission is not only to stage productions for entertainment, but also to promote Filipino
moral values, help change lives, and popularize theater for the public.
• Today, Trumpets is not only known for producing quality plays and originally written
musicals, but also for its multimedia workshops for all ages.

• Tanghalang Pilipino was established in 1987 as the resident drama of company of CCP.
Since its beginning, Tanghalang Pilipino has staged numerous quality productions that
challenge members of the audience to remain steadfast with their moral convictions,
pursue and uphold truth and justice, and fulfill a social responsibility for the betterment of
the country.
• In addition to is regular performances, the company also conducts theater workshops,
conferences, dialogues, consultations, and symposia to help educate Filipino audiences
and to awaken their cultural consciousness.

• New Voice Company (NVC) was founded in 1994 by Monique Wilson. It remains one
of the country’s leading theater companies as it continuously produces innovative and
stimulating theater that deals with current sociopolitical issues.
• NVC has the reputation as the country’s most political and social theater company. Its
vision is “To produce theater that enlightens, inspires, educates, informs, and incites
action to creates theater that becomes a powerful catalyst for change and a necessary tool
for social transformation – theatre that awakens.”
