For the academic year (2023-2024)

Ms. Salma N./ Ms. Samar M.

life when they reach the point where
they are no longer children, but
adults. The transition from a child
into a young adult is often referred to
as the "coming of age," or growing
up.
Discuss: When we say “Middle East”,
what comes into your mind?!

The Concept of the
Project
Iran's classification, among other Arab countries, as a member of the
“axis of evil” by George W. Bush in his “State of the Union” speech in
2002 highlighted the fact that the country has been mostly associated in
the West with terrorism and political radicalism.

This false belief however cascades to the people, and thus followed by a
certain behavior adopted by the West. This might lead to labelling of an
entire people based on a few politicians’ biased beliefs.

Although Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, presents a strong critique of

the Iranian government, the graphic narrative writes against common
stereotypes about the country and its population, rejecting simplistic
views.

Since we are digging deep in the Iranian culture through Persepolis, then
it comes only natural to further explore how misconceptions are deeply
rooted and intertwined across the middle east, not just limited to Iran.
While shedding light on the conflicting coexistence between the West —
Europe and America— and the Middle East.

List of Misconceptions toward The Middle East

1. Hijab = primitive / oppressed/ backward

2.ONLY when the country is copying American/

European culture/ life style it becomes “modern” (even
if it is not compatible with Arab culture)

3. White man mass shooting= individual mental illness,

Whereas if the same occurs in the Middle East, it
becomes an act of “Terrorism”

4. How media contributes in presenting Muslims as

terrorists advocating for Islamophobia

5. A person is appreciated if s/he speaks English or any

other language fluently. BUT an Arab is considered 2 nd
class citizen if s/he is monolingual
