Duties of a
Policeman
Mrs. Vella was very busy
organizing a surprise party for
the 50th birthday of his brother,
Vic. She had planned everything
about the party and could not
wait to see how his brother
would react to all the
surprises she had prepared for
him, with the help of their
relatives and friends.
"Melissa, are you ready to
leave? Please check the time.
We cannot be late for your Uncle
Vic's party," Mrs. Vella said.

"Yes, Mommy. Just give me a

few more minutes please to
fix my hair. I will be ready
soon," said Melissa.
"I still have to check if everything is in
place before your Uncle Vic arrives to
the venue. I really hope we will have
enough food, chairs, and tables for all
the guests. Mrs. Vella said.

"I also hope my younger brother,

Toto, is on his way to fetch the
birthday celebrant. Hon, may I request
you to be the one to entertain the
guests who will be arriving early?
They need someone to have a chat
with, as they wait for the program to
start," she said to Mr. Vella.
Things will be all right, my
dear. Please do not worry
too much. You have
prepared for this since last
month and I know you and
your relatives have given
your best. We just need to
enjoy the party later.
okay?" Mr. Vella said to his
wife.
On the way to the party venue, Melissa could
not help but wonder why her mother had given
so much effort for the birthday celebration of her
Uncle Vic. "Melissa, it rarely happens that we
get to sincerely thank a person for all the good
things he has done. Your mom
just thought of this as a
perfect time to invite some of
the people who would like to
show appreciation for the help
he has given them,” Mr. Vella
explained.
"That's true, Melissa. Your Uncle Vic has been a
very good and trustworthy policeman for several
years already. I just want to make this day extra
special for him by bringing together some of the
people he has helped through the years," Mrs.
Vella added.

"Melissa, do you understand

the duties of Uncle Vic and
other policemen?" Mr. Vella
asked.
"Hmm... I just remember you telling me many
times before that if ever I get lost, I should not
be afraid to approach a policeman for help. Aside
from helping lost kids, I really do not know what
else they do," Melissa answered.

"But Daddy, I noticed that

like Uncle Vic, policemen carry
a gun with them. Isn't that
bad?" Melissa asked.
Mr. Vella explained that
policemen have many other duties
such as helping people in trouble,
providing first aid treatment in
emergency situations, maintaining
peace and order, and catching
people who break laws.

He also told Melissa that

policemen carry guns because
they are tasked to protect people
from those who mean harm to
others.
"Policemen cannot use guns
without proper training and
practice. They also need to be
extra careful in using one, making
sure that it will only be used when
necessary," Mrs. Vella added.
"Thank you, Mommy and Daddy,
for teaching me more about the
life of a policeman. Now I have a
better understanding of the kind
of work he has. No wonder Uncle
Vic is also very protective of me. I
grew up knowing that he will
always be there to help and
take care of me even if I have
both of you around," Melissa
realized.
