LESSON OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson the learner should be able to:


• define the term adverb.
• Identity and give examples of adverbs.
• Construct sentences with adverbs.
• Adverb is a part of speech that is primarily used
to modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs or
entire sentences. Adverb provide information
about how, when, where or to what degree an
action is performed.
TYPES OF ADVERBS

• Adverbs of manner- describe how an action is done e.g


quickly, softly.
• Adverbs of time- indicate when an action occurs.
Examples; now, later.
• Adverbs of degree- show the intensity or degree of an
action, examples; very, too.
• Adverbs of place- These are words that describe
where or position of an action or event. Example;
far, here, below, inside, outside, etc.
• Adverbs of place provide information about
where something is happening.
Adverbs of frequency
These are adverbs that describes how often an
action happens, example; seldom, rarely, always,
usually, sometimes, often, etc.
Sentence examples of adverbs.
1. I ate my dinner quickly.- Quickly describes how the action ate took
place.
2. Jeff sees many puppies outside. Outside describes where Jeff sees
many puppies.
3. My father came home early. Early describes when the action took
place.
Placement of adverbs
Adverbs can appear before or after the verbs they modify, but the
placement can affect the meaning and emphasis of the sentence.
Example;
• She whispered the secret quietly. - emphasizing the verb.
• She quietly whispered the secret.- emphasizing the verb.
SUMMARY

• Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives,


or other adverbs. They often provide information
about how, when, or to what degree an action or
quality occurs.
