SYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION
• Synchronous communication is the exchange of
information between 2 or more people in real-
time.
• It may be in person but it certainly doesn’t
have to be.
• It allows participants to communicate via
video/computer conferencing, audio graphic
conferencing, phone calls, chat sessions,
instant messaging with the help of internet.

SYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION TOOLS
• Synchronous tools enable real time
communication and collaboration.

• These tools allow students/participants or

instructors to connect at the same.

• Synchronous activities may include chat

sessions, whiteboard drawings, and other
group interactive work.
SYNCHRONOUS ICT TOOLS
Synchronous Communication Tools
Chat

•Chat is a form of synchronous text-

based communication allowing students
and the instructor to meet in “real-
time” for conversation, discussion
forums, question and answer sessions,
or virtual office hours.
Synchronous Communication Tools

• Skype’s free version enables one to make

voice calls, video calls, send instant messages
or chat, and send SMS (Short Message
Service) text messages.

Skype basically turns the computer into a

telephone using a voice over Internet protocol
(VoIP) technology allowing people to
communicate from anywhere in the world.

Synchronous Communication Tools

Twitter • Twitter is a social networking tool that allows users to connect

with people and explore topics of interest (#hashtags).

• Twitter users can read and write short messages (up to 280
characters) that are organized by hashtags (e.g., #education).

• It is actually one of the most popular professional learning tools

for K-12 teachers.

• It is a great tool for backchanneling,

synchronous or asynchronous communication, and even
conducting research.

Importance of
Synchronous
Communication Tools

Allow teacher/instructor to use

video or face-to-face chat. Require real-time teamwork
ASYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION
• Asynchronous communication is when two (or more)
people can communicate without the requirement that
they be “present” at the same exact moment in time.

• Asynchronous teaching is where teaching materials

are posted online, and learners work through them in
their own time, communicating with each other and
the teacher.

• Good asynchronous teaching will include a variety

of media, including (but not limited to) audio and
video clips.

teammates.
ASYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION TOOLS
• Asynchronous tools enable communication and
collaboration over some time since there is no real-
time interaction.

• These tools allow people to connect at each

learner’s convenience and own schedule.

• Asynchronous tools are useful for sustaining

dialogue and collaboration
over a while and providing people with
resources and information that are
instantly accessible, day or night.
ASYNCHRONOUS ICT TOOLS
ASYNCHRONOUS
• COMMUNICATION
Wikis TOOLS
are a Web-based tool that allows the instructor
and students to work on projects together, share
resources, and collaborate.
• Wikis have become “an effective tool for generating
and sharing large amounts of complex knowledge”
(Mason & Rennie, 2008).
• The most noteworthy feature of wikis is the open
editing function to allow users to co-create information
and knowledge, supporting a constructivist, learner-
centered perspective.
ASYNCHRONOUS
• COMMUNICATION
A blog, TOOLS
also known as a web log, is an on-line journal
that can be made public or private. Students can use
blogs to create an online portfolio, post reflections, turn
in projects or assignments and receive feedback from
the instructor or other students.
• Postings are in reverse chronological order making
themed discussions easy to follow. “They can serve as
collaborative writing spaces where students share ideas
and work together to jointly express ideas.
ASYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION TOOLSEmail
• Email is the oldest collaboration tool and the most
common method for communication in online
learning. Private messages can be sent between the
instructor and the student. It is reliable, inexpensive,
and the most well-known.

• Email is often overlooked as a collaboration

mechanism in favor of flashier, more expensive, and
less reliable mechanisms. (Horton, 2006).
Let’s think about it.
