Ex-1 To increase Efficiency in terms of completion time/
idle/waiting time :
Different tasks have to be completed corresponding to jobs on two
machines M1 and M2. The completion time (hrs) is indicated in the
following table. Determine the total completion time of all the
tasks on both machines. Find out if the completion time can be
reduced. If yes, how many hours can be reduced. What is the
increase in efficiency related to completion time?
For multiple machines n x 4, ie. ‘n’ jobs on ‘4’ machines :
Check atleast one of the two conditions is satisfied:
(i) Min (M1) ≥ Max ( M2, M3)
(ii) Min (M4) ≥ Max ( M2, M3)
Example : Consider 3 jobs on 4 machines : M1 M2 M3 M4
J1 5 5 1 10
J2 8 2 8 9
J3 2 5 6 9
Check the following two conditions :
(i) Min (M1) ≥ Max ( M2, M3) : 2 ≥ 8 … Not satisfied
(ii) Min (M4) ≥ Max (M2, M3) :9 ≥ 8 …. Satisfied
Hence the machines can be combined to form two machines.

Ex-2
Different tasks have to be completed corresponding to jobs on
three machines M1, M2 and M3. The completion time (hrs) is
indicated in the following table. Determine the total completion
time of all the tasks on both machines. Find out if the completion
time can be reduced. If yes, how many hours can be reduced. What
is the increase in efficiency related to completion time? Determine
the waiting time (WT) and idle time (IT).

Ans.
Waiting time (WT) is the time a job has to wait for the machine to
be assigned.
Idle time (IT) is the time a machine has to wait for a job to be
received.
Based on FCFS order : Make-span, WT and IT are indicated in table:

Saving in Completion Time : 298-290 = 8 hrs. Eff increase in time = 8x100/298 = 2.68 %

Saving in waiting Time : 64-43 = 21 hrs. Eff increase in time = 21x100/64 = 32.18 %

Saving in Idle Time : 53-45 = 8 hrs. Eff increase in time = 8x100/53 = 15.09 %
