clarifying its meaning; its primary goal is to
clarify and explain concepts, ideas, and
issues.
Three ways in presenting definition:
a. Formal definition– Explains a term by clarifying where it originates
from and the characteristic that distinguishes it from others. This can
be done also through term, class, and distinguishing features.
Below is the diagram presentation on formal definition.
b. Informal definition – It is done through brief
explanation. It only includes the term to be defined and
its class.
Below is the diagram presentation on informal
definition.
c. Extended definition – It consists of at least one
paragraph with a detailed description and facts.

A concept paper…
• Is a summary document of what the project is all about, the reasons
for conducting the project, and how it will be carried out.
• provides an overview of the project and helps funding agencies
eliminate proposals that are likely to be disapproved. Hence, it helps
save time and effort for both the proponents and the funding
agencies.
Several uses of a concept paper:
• First, it serves as a foundation of the full proposal.
• Second, it helps determine whether a certain project is feasible or
not.
• Third, it is used to pique the interest of the potential funding
agencies.
• Finally, it is used to obtain informal feedback on the ideas prior to
preparing the full proposal.
• Since a concept paper is a preliminary document for a proposal, it
shows a preview of the improvements that the proponent would like
to have implemented.
• Concept papers can be helpful in addressing social issues especially
since they aim to show solutions to tangible issues which plague
society.
Parts of a concept paper
• A concept paper usually ranges from 500 to 2000 words and is usually
divided into several parts.
• The parts of the concept paper may also vary depending on the
nature of the project/activity.
Performance task
• Write a concept paper. Assume a lead persona
of a lead researcher for a non-government
organization who intends to submit a proposal
for a project funded by Asian Development
Bank. You may also follow the structure of the
sample texts to be given by your teacher or
