1.0 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DRAWING

 Engineering Drawing is the art of Drawing three dimensional objects onto a two
dimension plane (paper or drawing sheet).
 The effective communication of various engineering information can be achieved through
correct drawings or graphic materials.
 Drawing practice must follow certain rules, if it is to serve as a means of communication.
 For this purpose, British Standards 308 (BS 308) and the subsequent British Standard
8888 * (BS 8888) are adapted as the International Standards on codes of practice for
engineering drawings
1.1 DRAWING TOOLS
 Engineering Drawing can be classified as either conventional drawing or computer Aided
drawing (CAD).
 What we shall study in here is the conventional drawing, where we shall utilize tools such
drawing pencils, drawing boards, drawing paper, engineering drawing set, and set-
squares, among others.
1. 2 DRAWING PAPERS
1. 3 PAIR OF COMPASSES

 This tool is used for drawing arcs and circular planes, marking out, transferring
dimensions, among others.
1. 4 SET SQUARES/ ENGINEERING TRIANGLES

 There are two setsquares/ engieering triangle, namely the 30° 60° and 45° set squares.
 These are used to readily draw the angles 30°, 60°, 45° as well as 90°.
1. 5 TEE-SQUARE

 Used to project vertical and horizontal lines.

1. 6 DRAWING PENCILS

 The recommended pencils are in the ‘H’ grade pencils.

1. 7 DRAWING BOARD

 Drawing boards for size A2 paper can be bought with a fitted horizontal square which
slides up and down on rollers or those with a separate T-square which slides up and down
on the side of the drawing board and has to be held in place when used.
1. 8 CLIPS OR TAPE

 The best tape to use to hold paper on the drawing board is masking tape but metal
drawing board clips are easier to use.
2.0 THE TITLE BLOCK
3.0 PRINTING

 Printing or writing will normally be done in uppercase.

 It is important for the draftsman (you) to be able to print legibly and horizontally.
 It may be noted that, an uppercase letter must be approximately twice the height and
width of its corresponding lowercase.
4.0 SCALE

 Scales are used to make drawing of the objects to proportionate size desired.
5.0 LINE PROPERTIES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

 Lines of different types and thicknesses are used for graphical representation of objects.
 The line weight is the approximate thickness of a line.
