Hexose monophosphate pathway (HMP).

Phosphogluconate Pathway

HMP Shunt
• Alternative to Glucose oxidation .
• Enzyme Location – Cytosol, plastids(plant)
• Function:--
1. To provide NADPH for Reductive Biosynthesis
2. To provide ribose -5-, Phosphate for nucleotide and nucleic acid biosynthesis.
• The sequence of reactions of HMP shunt is divided into two phase .
1. Oxidative (Irreversible) = Formation of NADPH & CO2.
2. Non – Oxidative ( Reversible) = Formation of Ribose 5 phosphate
• G6PD deficiency is an X – Linked recessive disease, G6PD deficiency result in
hemolytic anemia caused by the inability to detoxify oxidizing agent.
• In a 1 cycle net result of the oxidative phase is generation of 2 mole of NADPH,
oxidation of 1 carbon to CO2, and the synthesis of 1mole of Pentose phosphate.
6 NADP+  6 NADPH
3 × G3P ------------------------- 3 × Ru5P + 3 × CO2
