Introduction to Experiential Learning Programme

Experiential learning is a learning activity that has three

main characteristics:
1. It is based around an experience, activity or action .
2. It is inductive, in that learners are not told directly what to
learn. Instead, learners learn whatever they can and want to
from the activity
3. It is learner-centered; it is about what the learners want
and need, not about what the teacher wants or needs
*While much of education and learning is about product (a
test, a presentation, a report), experiential learning is about
process.
OBJECTIVES OF ELP
● To promote professional skills and knowledge through meaningful hands-on experience.
● To build confidence and to work in project mode.
● To acquire enterprise management capabilities
● Refinement of student’s acquired knowledge and understanding
on commercial production of QPM through horticulture
● Capacity building for designing and development of ecologically
sustainable and economically profitable agribusiness models on commercial horticulture
● Learning the art and science of production and managerial skills under protected environment
● Becoming a prospective entrepreneur for employment generation
Introduction to Commercial Horticulture
● Horticulture is a science ,as well as art of production,
utilization and improvement of horticultural crops
such as
fruits,vegetables ,spices ,ornamental,medicinal and
aromatic plants
● Commercial Horticulture includes the
production,harvesting,marketing and distribution of
small fruits ,trees fruits,wine
grapes ,vegetables ,alternative specialty
crops ,greenhouse ornamental and edible
crops ,container and in ground nursery crops, as well
as the design, installation, and maintenance of
residential and commercial landscapes.
INTRODUCTION TO ASHWAGANDHA
Common Name- Ashwagandha, Winter Cherry,Indian
ginseng, Poison gooseberry
Taxonomical Classification
Botanical Name- Withania somnifera
Kingdom: Plantae
Order:Solanales
Family:Solanaceae
Genus:Withania
Species:W. somnifera
IMPORTANCE OF ASHWAGANDHA

● Helpful in Reducing blood sugar levels

● Improves Bone Health

● Helps to fight cancer

● Improve thyroid function

● Increases muscle strength

● Helps to reduce anxiety and stress

● Boost immunity
NURSERY MANAGEMENT

A nursery can be as simple as a raised bed in an open field or a sophisticated green

house with microsprinklers and controlled atmospheric systems

The main phases of nursery management are-

● Planning - demand for planting material, provision of mother blocks, requirement
of land area, water supply, working tools, growing structures and input availability.
● Implementation - land treatment, protection against biotic interference and soil
erosion, proper layout, input supply, etc.
● Monitoring and evaluation - physical presence, rapid response, critical analysis,
incentive to workers, etc
● Feed back for further refinement.
● The key elements of c nursery management are the place, the plant and the person
behind nursery management.
Importance of Nursery Management

● It is very convenient to look after the tender

seedlings.
● It is easy to protect the seedlings from pests and
diseases.
● Economy of land usage (duration in the main field is
reduced).
● Valuable and very small seeds can be raised
effectively without any wastage.
● Uniform crop stand in the main field can be
maintained by selecting healthy, uniform and
vigorous seedlings in the nursery itself

Methodology and Practices Used
★ Experiential learning programme was conducted at the Hasanpur Farm, Department of
Agriculture, Quantum University, Roorkee (30°33’ N, 770 09’ E),Uttarakhand.
★ The nursery having a net plot size of 3 m × 3 m.
★ The soil texture was sandy clay loam (51.16% sand, 22.83% silt, 26.57% clay) with an
average pH of 7.9, total soluble salts 0.21% and organic matter 0.74%.

Meteorological data of field area

Practices used -II
Seed Bed Preparation
Nursery beds raised as 3 m long, 3 m wide and 20-25 cm high
, mixed with organic FYM @15 Kg per bed.
Seed Rate
I kept seed rate @100g/ bed.

Seed Treatment
Dithiane M45 (to avoid nursery disease) at the rate 3gm/kg
seeds before sowing
Sowing
Seeds are sown at equal distance by broadcasting method. In this I mixed the seed with
sand (for equally distribution).
Mulching
Mulching with paddy straw/Gunny bag & light irrigated with Rose cane.
Practices part III

Fertilizer Management
A basal dose of DAP@250gm. / Bed and after
germination Urea was Broadcast @100gm / Bed
Weeding
After removing mulching, 4-6 times hand weeding was
done with Khurpi.
Field Size
Field was kept in 4m and 5m. The area of field is 20m2.
Transplanting
I planted the seedling at maintain distance row to row 60cm
and plant to plant 30cm. Number of Plants in field was 111.

Conclusion

The results of experiential program report showed that the

plants were of quite good height and had optimum number
of branches with respect to the age of the plants on the date
of observation recorded and the germination percentage
achieved in the laboratory was found to be impressive
regarding to the inputs provided in the plot. The findings
indicate that the growth and yield parameters can be
increased to a greater extent with the use of Vermicompost
and Biofertilizers. It is concluded that the nursery sowing of
W. somnifera seeds, when done in after the fortnight month
of February shows excellent results in terms of the
germination, growth, health, yield etc. and can be used for
various medicinal and health purposes.

Conclusion
➢ Sunflower is an oil seed crop with countless medicinal qualities and for oil
extraction.
➢ Different extraction methods were attempted for the entire plant, aerial parts
and flowers ;It is effective in treating different diseases.
➢ From The result of this report ,we concluded that plants were of quite good

Findings and Suggestions
● We should use the given resources effectively as they are very scarce.
● Time management and resource allocation is the key.
● Besides this, team management and work in coordinated manner is also very
important
● The crucial understanding that we got is farming is a business with huge
growth potential if assets are leveraged in a right manner.
● Distribution of implements among students should be proportionately to avoid
clashes among students for different implements.
● Planting material should be made available in the college itself as managing to
bring it from outside takes time which can be utilized for farm work.
● There should be coordination between the groups to avoid conflicts and for
smooth marketing
