Advantages
1. Improves accessibility to inaccessible area
2. Continuous connectivity over land and water
3. Saves productive time spent in the journey
4. Increase the demand of specialized technical skill workforce
5. Provide the relief during emergency

Disadvantages
6. Operating cost: heavy funds are required to maintain the system
7. Operations are dependent on weather condition
8. Specific demarcation of flight paths and territories are essential
9. Weight carrying capacity of aircrafts is the lowest amongst other carrier of transport

Development of Air transport Assam Engineering College

• 1903– first successful flight was by Wilbur and Orville Wrights, kitty Hawk, North carolina
• 1909- French pilot Louis bleriot crossed the English channel to England
• 1911- Beginning of air flight in India from Allahbad to Naini by Henri Piquet
• 1912- flight between Delhi and Karachi
• 1914- Air passenger transport began in Germany
• 1918-First International service between France and Spain
• 1927-First civil aviation department was established
• 1929- Regular Air service between Delhi and karachi
• 1932-Tata Airways Ltd. Was set up
• 1933- Indian Trans-Continental Airways ltd was formed
• 1938- By the end of year153 Aircrafts were registered
• 1946- Air Transport Licencing Board was established

• 1947– Tata Airways Ltd changed its name to Air India Ltd.
• 1948- Air India International Ltd. Was established by the Govt.
• 1953- Air transport corporation Bill was passed under which Air India International and Indian
Airlines were formed as Public sector Corporation
• 1972- International Airport Authority Of India(IAAI) was set up
• 1980- National Airport Authority of India (NAAI) was established
• 1994-IAAI merged with NAAI to form Airport Authority of India

Established in 1944 as a result of Chicago Convention


The organisation is made up of the Assembly, the Council and a Secretariate
1. The Assembly composed of representatives of all contracting states is the sovereign body of
ICAO
2. The council the governing body is selected by the assembly for a three year term.
3. The Secretariate headed by a secretary General is divided into five divisions:
• Air Navigation Bureau
• AirTransport Bureau
• Technical Assistance Bureau
• Legal Bureau
• Bureau of Administration and Services

ICAO ‘s main aim and objectives is to develop the principles and techniques for international air navigation
Objectives:
• ICAO Ensure the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation throughout the world
• ICAO provides the machinery for the achievement of international co-operation in the air
• ICAO provides the international link between civil and military flying activities
• ICAO also provides assistance to developing countries by the provision of internal experts, instructors,
training, equipment and fellowships or training aboard.
• Insure that the rights of contracting states are fully respected and that every contracting states has a fair
opportunity to operate international airlines

Functions
• It undertakes or supervise all technical developments work in the fields of aeronautics
• It prescribes and enforces the civil air regulations for safety standards
• It makes provisions for the control and protection for air traffic moving in air commerce
• Provides for aircraft registration

Airport Authority of India was constituted by an Act of parliament on 1 st April 1995, by merging National
airport authority and International Airport Authority of India.
Functions
• Control and the management of the Indian air space extending beyond the territorial limits of the country
as accepted by ICAO
• Design, development, maintenance and operation of International and domestic airports
• Development and management of cargo and passenger terminals
• Provision of passenger facilities and information system at the passenger terminals
• Expansion and strengthening of operation area

Based on Geometric design


The ICAO uses a two element references code to classify the geometric design standards for Airports
• The code no 1 through 4 classify the length of runway available
• The code letters A through E classify the wingspan and the outer main wheel gear span for the aircraft for
which the Airport has been designed
