Biomes Assessment

Tropical Rainforests
By Tishani.
Tropical rainforests are mainly found between
the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer they are also

Space and found more specifically in South and Central

America, western and central Africa, western
India, Southeast Asia, the island of New Guinea,
Place and a small portion of Australia. What makes
tropical rainforest unique? Well, it's very high
annual rainfall, high average temperatures,
nutrient-poor soil, and high levels of biodiversity
(species richness).

Above is a map with the locations of

tropical rainforest biomes around the world
It rains all year round in tropical rainforests, a moist
biome. This biome is defined by three different layers
of dense vegetation. Beginning with the very top
layer, also known to as the canopy, which is made up
of quite large trees that may grow to heights of at
about 75 metres (roughly about 250 ft). The second
layer is the understory, which is composed of vines,
Environment smaller trees, ferns, and palms. Then, wet leaves and
other leaf litter are spread across the rainforest's
base layer, or floor. The material decomposes quickly
in the warm, humid environment, returning the
nutrients to the soil as it does so. There are fewer
plants present in the forests base as a result of lack of
sunlight. But the hot, humid environment and all the
decomposing plant matter make the perfect
ecosystem for bacteria and other microorganisms to
flourish.
The temperature of rainforest biomes remains
warm all year with plentiful rainfall as
mentioned before. Now according to NASA, the
Climate average daily temperatures in a rainforest biome
would usually range from around 20°C to 25°C.

As you can see in the image to the left canopies

can grow to immense heights.
The diversity in this biome is magnificent, its plant
species have been around a very long time, some
date up to about 100 million years old! Some flora
may include the Heliconia Flower, known as one of
the most beautiful plants in the Amazon rainforest or
even the Rubber Tree, it is one of the most important
plant of the rainforests from an economical point of
Flora and view
Continuing with Fauna, the tropical rainforests
Fauna species and organisms' population is about hundreds
to thousands. The main categorised species insects,
birds, mammals, reptiles and aquatics number up to
at the least- fifteen thousand of animals that have yet
to be identified. Now it is estimated that just about
half the worlds animal species inhabit the worlds
tropical rainforest biomes.

To the left is a image of the Heliconia

flower, which is found in the amazon.
Task 3: Food production and
resources

Here are 5 resources that are produced/farmed from tropical

rainforests, these resources will either be renewable or non-renewable.
Now to begin with, gold it is one of the densest of all
metals. There has been small-scale gold mining has
been going on in the Amazon for decades, with huge
expansion of this activity since the early 2000s. It is
often done via river dredging, in which miners
excavate sediments in search of small pieces of gold.
Tropical forests in South America below 1,000 meters
were examined in the study, which was published in
Gold Environmental Research Letters. These countries
included Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname,
French Guiana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
After the 2007 global financial crisis, forest clearing
for gold mining appears to have increased, according
to satellite pictures leading to the conclusion that
gold is not environmentally sustainable nor non-
renewable.

Here above is simply just one example of a gold mine site and its
effect on the tropical rainforests.
Passion fruit production is quite good for the air,
water, land, soil and tropical rainforests. It’s fine
for the general environment especially when
pesticides are not used. It is much more
commonly consumed and produced in tropical
rainforests throughout much of South America.
Passion fruit The fruit is a vine-grown, golden to dark brown
color with a juicy, seed-filled interior. Provitamin
A, beta carotene, vitamin C, nutritional fiber, and
iron are all present in fresh passion fruit.
Down below are images of pawpaw and palm tree oil

Other food
products/resources The most important impact of unsustainable palm oil production is the vast
destruction of tropical forests. In addition to significant habitat loss for
endangered species like Asian rhinos, elephants, tigers, and orangutans, this can
cause significant soil erosion, which is unsustainable for the tropical rainforest
biomes.

Mango production is quite sustainable due to the potential of carbon

sequestration (i.e., capturing and storing carbon) and the fact that the same tree
is used to produce both fruit and wood.

Pawpaw production is, in fact, comparatively sustainable, according to

healabel.com, as there is little harm done to the air, water, land, soil, forests, etc.
Task 4:Threats to the
sustainability

Here will be research about the threats and/or challenges that the
tropical rainforest biome has been and will continue to face if nothing is
done.
The rising rates of greenhouse gas production
each year, posing a constant threat to tropical
rainforest biomes. The observed changes,
according to energyeducation.ca, also include
warming temperatures, making drought a
significant problem as the humidity in these
rainforests continues to drop quickly. Species
Threats that are well adapted to the high moisture of
this biome are now suffering as a result of this
shift. The rapid population development needing
more land for housing and other facilities, the
logging and paper industries, and other factors
have all contributed to an increase in the threats
to tropical rainforest biomes in recent years.
Tropical rainforests can be preserved in the following
methods to avoid additional damage. Through
selective removal of mature trees and ensuing
replanting, the canopy of the jungle can be
preserved. This approach helps the forest regenerate
because the younger trees are allowed more space
and sunlight to grow. Thanks to planned and
controlled logging, a new tree is always planted for
Sustainability each one that is removed. We can also inform people
about the value and benefits of the biodiversity that
can be found in tropical jungles. By keeping their
habitat warm, which means that weather changes
won't affect food supplies, and by providing shade
from the sun, these actions can help the animals of
the tropical rainforest maintain their use of the best
environment.
