What is adolescence: -
 The word adolescence is derived from the Latin word “adolescere”, which means
to “grow up” or “to mature”.
 It isa period of transition between childhood and adulthood that involve a number
of changes in body and mind.
 World Health Organization(WHO)defines adolescence as a phase of life between
10 to 19 years of age categorized by physical growth, emotional, psychological
and behavioral changes, thus, bringing about transformation from childhood to
adulthood.
 These changes usually occur a year or two years earlier in girls than boys. Some of
the changes are externally visible and some are internal. These changes are normal
and neutral and are due to release of various hormones in both boys and girls.
 It is a period of rapid physical and biological changes which may lead to develop
competence tension, frustration and feeling of insecurity.
Three main stages of adolescence

 Early adolescence (9-13 years) characterized by a spurt of

growth and the development of secondary sexual
characteristics.
 Mid adolescence (14-15 years) - this stage is distinguished
by the development of a separate identity from parents, of
new relationships with peer groups and the opposite sex, and
of experimentation.
 Late adolescence (16-19 years) - At this stage, adolescents
have fully developed physical characteristics (similar to
adults), and have formed a distinct identity and have well-
formed opinions and ideas.
Physical development

 Physical changes of puberty mark the onset of

adolescence.
 These changes include a growth spurt in height,
growth of pubic and underarm hair, and skin
changes (e.g., pimples).
 Males experience growth in facial hair and a
deepening of their voice. Females experience
breast development and begin menstruating.
 These pubertal changes are driven by
hormones, particularly an increase in
testosterone for males and estrogen for females.
