Conservation of Energy
Same Height , Different Paths :
• The conservation of energy means that objects moving
downward through the same vertical distance but following
different paths will have the same final speed.
• BUT ….
• The time required to get the bottom is different .

Same Path , Different speeds :

• Changing the initial speed of a downward

moving object by a small amount ….can
result in a relatively large increase in final
speed.
Lesson check : P.211

40 if the potential energy of an object decreases by 10 J, the kinetic energy

of the object increases by 10 J.
In order for mechanical energy of a system to be conserved there must not

be any loss of energy from the system.

(a) at the instant it leaves your hand, when it has no
gravitational potential energy. It is maximum again when
it returns to your hand.
(b) KE = 0 at the maximum height, when it momentarily
comes to rest.

(c) at the maximum height, when its kinetic energy is

zero.
(d) PE = 0 at the height it is released from your hand.
