Two Main Methods of Sampling

Different Types of
Random Sampling
1. A Lottery Sampling technique is
the most basic random sampling
Jens Martensson
where in eah elements in the
population has an equal probability of
being selected. An instance of this is
when members of the population have
their names represented by small
pieces of paper that are then randomly
mixed together and picked out. In the
sample, the members selected will be
included. 4

2. A Systematic Random
Sampling. This can be done by
listing all the elements in the

population and selecting every key
elements in your population list.
This is equally precise as the
simple random sampling. It is
often used on long population lists.
To determined the interval to be
used in identifying the samples to
who will participate in the study
use the key formula 5

3. A Stratified random sampling
is a random sampling where in the
population is divided into deffirent

strata or divisions. The number of
samples will be proportionately
picked in each stratum that is why
all strata are represented in the
sample

4. A Cluster sampling
is a random sampling where in the
Jens Martensson
population is divided into cluster
or groups and then the cluster are
randomly selected. All elements of
the clusters randomly selected are
considered the samples of study.

5. A Multi-stage sampling
Jens Martensson
Multi-stage sampling uses a
combination of different sampling
techniques. For example, when
selecting respondents for a national
election survey, we can use the
lottery method first for regions and
cities. We can then use stratified
sampling to determine the number
of respondents from selected areas 9
and clusters.
