SPECIAL EDUCATION PROCESS


TERMS
IDEA- Individuals with Disabilities Education Act- is the federal law
that ensures all children with disabilities are entitled to a free
appropriate public education to meet their unique needs and
prepare them for further education, employment and
independent living.

CHILD FIND- is a federal mandate under the IDEA. Under federal


law the public schools must look for, find, and evaluate
kids who need special education.

TERMS
LRE - Least Restricted Environment- means that a student who has a
disability should have the opportunity to be educated with non-
disabled peers, to the greatest extent appropriate.

IEP - Individual Education Program. is a plan or program developed to


ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is
attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives
specialized instruction and related services.

Child find- each state is required to identify, locate and
evaluate all children with disabilities.
Pre-referral
Main objectives of the pre-referral of the IEP process
are:
►Document challenges and difficulties

► Evaluation of current classroom accommodations


► Assess if different teaching methods are
impactful

► Supervise the development of the student

REFERRAL
Referral- happens when the pre-referral attempts to
correct the child’s issues fail

EVALUATION

The school will conduct an


evaluation of the child in all areas
of suspected disability to determine
if he or she has a disability, and to
determine his or her educational
needs.

EVALUATION
The evaluation process for the child must:
• Include information about the child’s
academic, developmental and functional
performance

• Be administered by trained and knowledgeable


personnel;

• Be administered in the child’s native language


or other mode of communication; and

• Be unbiased or given in such a way so as not to


discriminate against the child, regardless of his
or her cultural background, race, or disability.

IEP
If the child is eligible to receive special education
and related services, a team then develops and
implements an appropriate IEP to meet the needs and
recommended services for the child.

► An IEP team is formed including:


♦ Parents
♦ Educators
♦ Administrators
♦ Other specialist
♦ Parents can bring a child advocate
► IEP is formed
► Least Restricted Environment (LRE)
► Goals are created

Don’t Forget

Embracing special children in mainstreaming of the regular is the


call of the time. A special teacher know how to design and
innovate to suit the needs of special children.

Teacher touch lives, but special education teachers “reach and


touch” lives of children under their care.
