MATHEMATICS - 9
MIDLINE THEOREM
Example 1. Given M and N are midpoints of DE̅̅̅̅ and EF̅̅̅̅ , respectively. If |MN|= 14 cm, find |DF|.

Solution:

| DF | = 2 | MN |

| DF | = 2(14)

| DF | = 28 cm
MIDLINE THEOREM
Example 2. Refer to the figure below. Find |DE| if D and E are midpoints of ̅BA̅̅̅ and BC̅̅̅̅ , respectively

and |AC| = 46 cm
Solution:

| AC | = 2 | DE |

| 46 | = 2 | DE |

| DE | = 23
MIDLINE THEOREM
Example 3. In the figure below, D and E are midpoints of AB̅̅̅̅ and AC̅̅̅̅ , respectively. Find the value of

x.
Solution:

|BC| = 2|DE|

26 = 2(3x-5) x=6

26 = 6x-10

26 + 10 = 6x

36 = 6x
Activity 1 – Write your answer on a ½ Crosswise.
Solution a. Solution b.

|LN| = 2|EF| x=3

x+10 = 2(x+3.5) LN = x + 10

x+10 = 2x+7 LN = 3 + 10

10 -7 = 2x - x LN = 13

3 = x or x = 3
Solution c. Solution d.

|LN| = 2|EF| x = 10
10 = x or x = 10
x+2 = 2(2x-14) SR = 2x -14

x+2 = 4x-28 SR = 2(10) - 14

2 + 28 = 4x - x SR = 20 - 14

30 = 3x SR = 6
TRAPEZOID AND KITE
Example: Given trapezoid NICE below, find |AB|.

Solution:

|AB| = ½ (|NI| + |EC|)

|AB| = ½ (12 + 16)

|AB| = ½ (28)

|AB| = 14 cm
TRAPEZOID AND KITE
Using the kite shown below, find the length of the red (vertical) diagonal.

Solution:

64 + 225 =

= 289

c = 17
