The PPP triangle

method in teaching
A common innovative method in teaching

Presented by Jana Mekari (18548) and Mariam El Ayoubi

What is this method?
 This method is established when teaching a language.
 It is known for 3Ps or PPP method - presentation, practice, and
production.
 These stages are familiar with all learners where they work in
combination to create effective communicative language learning in
a simple clarification or demonstration to grasp the information.
 It is a common modern methodology where the teacher uses a
sequence where she/he presents the item being studied, practices it,
and then students learn how to use the item.
PPP Approach

Presentation

Practice

Production
Why is it a pyramid?

Each of the following stages builds on the previous stage.

The shape is triangular and it represents the top where it is
narrowed and the teacher’s talking time is little, then it
widens where the learner’s time is broaden (expended) as the
lesson progresses.
To better understand the time that should be given to
each stage, check out this explanation:

1st is presentation: teacher talk time is reduced to a

minimum .
2nd is practice: students apply the knowledge given and are
offered support and enough increased time.
3rd is production: students’ free practice will increase.
1-Presentation

 It is where students are orally exposed to the teacher’s

explanation.
 The teacher introduces a situation containing the new
information that learners must understand.
 The teacher presents the target language in the context to
check the understanding of the students.
What is the teacher’s role in the
presentation part?

The teacher plays a major role in familiarizing the lesson

where she/ he presents comprehensible input.
How does the presentation part help the
students?

This part of the 3Ps method allows students to be exposed to

the lesson in an alternative way rather than just listening.
When seeing and exploring a lesson orally in an embedded
context, students find the lesson easier to understand.
There are three parts to consider in the
presentation stage.

1. Pronunciation >> drill and show the lesson.

2. Meaning >> understand the language
3. Form of the target language >> how the language works
Presentation part
Present Stage

It is used to introduce new or target language.

The teacher can use :

PPT Songs presentation

Flash cards Drills

Picture cards Games -

Videos Direct questions

2-Practice

 It is the part of the method teachers provide practice so

that students have the opportunity to rehearse the new
aspect of language being taught by realistic or
contextualized activities.
 They ought to be controlled activities such as worksheets
or question and answer activities because interaction is a
key to a better understanding.
 The teacher makes sure that everything is clear to the
students. These drills help the teacher notice if students
understood the items presented in the first stage.
What is so important in the practice part?
The best thing about this part is the countless amount of
activities the teacher can do to make sure the students have
understood the point of the given lesson.
The teacher provides students with different activities to
make sure that the idea has been grasped by the students.
These plenty opportunities are the best way to test the
teacher’s ability and skill in spotting students who have
understood or not the particular lesson since the teacher’s
role is important here if students are to understand the given
lesson.
Practice Stage

It gives controlled practice through controlled activities.

The teacher can use :

Questions and Pre-written role -

answers plays
Choral response Jigsaw activities
practice
Read and repeat games

worksheets Direct questions -

Practice part
How does the practice part help the
students?
 Students will be encouraged to interact with the teacher.
 They will be motivated in ways that build their self-
confidence where they believe that they are fully capable
of accomplishing the tasks assigned to them.
 The best way to test the efficiency of this part is to
compare between using practice as an essential part and
skipping it in classrooms.
3-Production

In this part of the method, it is time for students to

transfer the acquired information studied and
explained in the previous parts of the method to
different situations.
The students use or produce what they have learned
in communicative activities such as role-plays,
communication games, question and answer
sessions.
Production Stage

-To freely interact as much as possible and explore the language

-The teacher can use :

Group and pair Gathering -

work information
Creating dialogue Interview
-
Creating role plays Games

Creating stories Presentations production

What does the production part offer to
students?

• This is the time where students are provided with the

opportunity not only to practice, but to try and use the new
language in a context.
• Students show how much they have learned during the
lesson.
• The teacher tests if students have been paying attention to
the language or lesson given in context and are able to
produce it in real life..
Is it necessary to go through this part?

Some teachers only focus on the two previous part and skip
this part because it’s time consuming but that’s wrong
because students would have acquired the item but don’t
know how to apply it in real life.
The aim of this part is to increase fluency in linguistic use
through more creative activities rather than traditional ones.
This part will help students achieve goals that are based on
using the target language or lesson in different contexts.
Production part
In order to complete this method
effectively , the teacher should divide
her lesson plan according to this
outline Presentation
5 to 10 minutes

Practice
10 to 15 minutes

Production
20 to 25 minutes
When does the teacher move to the next
stage?
 In order to move to the second stage, the teacher should
master the 1st.
 The teacher needs to check in order to move to practice.
Practice is also known as “controlled practice”.
 It involves the teacher’s support, monitor, and feedback.
The teacher is responsible to check whether the students
answered correctly as well as offering her help in using the
language properly.
 Once the teacher is satisfied and happy with the students’
performance, she moves to stage 3 which is the production
stage.
What happens when the students’
performance isn’t as expected?

In case the teacher faces any problems or difficulties in

moving smoothly from one stage to another, this means that
she has to go back to the previous stage and master it.
Once she is satisfied, she can proceed by moving to the
following stage and take a step forward.
What are the advantages of this method?

This method, though it takes a lot of time, is easy to prepare and

follows only three steps.
Not only it is easy to prepare, it’s also easy for learners to follow
up with the lesson and keep focused unlike some classes where
the teacher just gives the lesson and the uncovering of the lesson
idea is done by the students.
This method scaffolds the learning process into smaller parts by
first, exposing learners to the target structure, then giving them
controlled practice, and at the end, free practice.
