DETECTOR

A device or instrument
designed to detect the
presence of a particular
object or substance
MD-CT

Multi slice helical CT imaging system

have multiple detectors in an array
that numbers up to tens of
thousands
TYPES OF DETECTORS
Two types of detectors are used:
1. Gas filled detectors
2. Scintillation/Solid state detectors

Previously gas filled detectors were used,

but now, all are scinitillation, solid state detetors
SCINTILLATION
DETECTORS
A scintillator is a material that exhibits scintillation — the
property of luminescence,[1] when excited by ionizing radiation.
Luminescent materials, when struck by an incoming particle,
absorb its energy and scintillate, (i.e. re-emit the absorbed
energy in the form of light).
A scintillation detector is obtained when a scintillator is coupled to
an electronic light sensor such as a photomultiplier tube (PMT),
photodiode, or silicon photomultiplier. PMTs absorb the light
emitted by the scintillator and re-emit it in the form of electrons via
the photoelectric effect.
SCINTILLATION
CRYSTALS
1. Sodium iodide
2.Bismuth germanate
3.Cesium iodide
4.Cadmium tungstate

Scintillation detectors have high x-ray detection efiiciency

approximately 90% of The x-ray incident on the detectors
are absorbed and this contributes to the output signals
FEATURES
The concentration of scintillation detectors is an important
characteristics of a ct Imaging system that affects the spatial
resolution of the system.

It is now possible to pack the detectors so that the space between

Them is nil.

Conseqeuntly overall detection efficiency approaches 90%.

The efficiency of the detector array educes the patient radiation

dose, allow the Faster imaging time, and improves, and image
