Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:


• discuss the fundamentals of body movement;
• describe and differentiate locomotor from non-locomotor
movements;
• create a simple exercise routine with the combination of
locomotor and non-locomotor movements; and
• cite the importance of locomotor and non-locomotor
movements in the physical fitness of a person.
Fundamental Body Movements
• are the building blocks necessary for more
complex physical activities. Playing sports,
exercising, and dancing all require a command
of simple, fundamental body movements.
2 Main Categories of Body
Movement
Non-Locomotor Movement Locomotor Movement
Non-Locomotor Movement
• also sometimes called axial movements.
• They are movements of certain body parts, or even the
whole body, without causing the body to travel.
• Done in stationary form.
Non-Locomotor Movements
Bending or Flexing- moving the muscles
around a joint where two body parts
meet.

Stretching or Extending-is done by


straightening or extending any part of
the body from the joints.

Lifting or raising -is elevating a part of


the body, usually for the arms and legs.
Non-Locomotor Movements
Twisting- is moving a part of
the body around a long axis,
usually for the head and
body.

Rotating- is done by moving a


part of the body around axis.

Swinging- is a pendular
movement below an axis.
Locomotor Movement
• movements that travel through space or carry weight
from one location to another.
• primarily use the feet for support however, the body can
travel on other parts such as the hands and feet.
Locomotor Movements
Even Rhythm- movements
consist of equal, unvarying
actions.
• Walking– a series of steps
in all directions.
• Running- to walk with
longer strides with the push
off by the foot suspends
the dody momentarily in
the air.
• Hopping- to spring one
foot and to land on the
same foot

• Jumping- to spring both


feet and to land on both
feet.
• Leaping- to spring on
one foot and to land on
the other foot.

Uneven Rhythm-
movements consist of
unequal actions
•Skipping- to step and
hop with the same foot in
one count.
•Galloping- a combined
step and cut
•Sliding- to glide right and
left foot alternately.

• The class will be divided into 3 groups
• Each group will create a simple exercise routine
with the combination of locomotor and non-
locomotor movements for 5 mins.
