COMMANDMENT # 5 which talks about

HONORING YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER

InEXODUS 20:12 reads

‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER, SO
THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG IN THE LAND…’
The second verse of Our Pledge of Trinidad &
Tobago speaks about: and I quote

I will honour my parents, My teachers, my

leaders and my elders, and those in
authority.
But what does HONOR means?
Well according to the web:

Honor means to show very high

regard, reverence, or value
for me i always sees honor and respect going
hand in hand
"Respect for one's parents is the ultimate responsibility in civil life," it is claimed. We
commemorate our parents on days like Mother's Day and Father's Day, but do we truly
pay attention to how much we appreciate them? Parents are in charge of their children.
Mother's Day and Father's Day are long-awaited red-letter days for some individuals, and
some of them have their hands filled planning such significant celebrations for their
parents. To be honest, I don't recall the date. This is because, in my opinion, such
celebrations are unimportant, as every day should be a day of celebration for both of our
parents.
In truth, honoring them is not the same as respecting them. We've been taught to respect our
parents both formally and informally since we were children. Since then, all of the whys and
what should we do have been answered. However, as we go through life, some of us forget
about our responsibilities as children. The rise in the number of people living in senior
people's homes demonstrates this. Some of us left our parents behind and yet walk boldly,
proclaiming our love for them. This type of incident occurred because we were too
preoccupied with chasing our life goals.
WHY DID GOD GIVE THIS COMMANDMENT ?
BECAUSE….
1. There are no perfect parents!

2. Respect for authority begins at home.

3. How I/you relate to our parents will affect every other relationship.
ONE MAY ASK: HOW TO HONOR OUR
PARENTS?

I will say it depends on what stage of life we are in. Since each stage
we all apply this command differently.

Apply this command differently hmmmm but what does this

mean…. Simple
Lets look into Gods word for directions
AS A CHILD, I HONOR MY PARENTS BY OBEYING AN
RESPECTING THEM.

EPHESIANS 6:1-3
CHILDREN, OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD, FOR
THIS IS RIGHT. 2 “HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,”
WHICH IS THE FIRST COMMANDMENT WITH PROMISE: 3
“THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU AND YOU MAY LIVE
LONG ON THE EARTH.”.
As children we all dishonor our parents in some way
or the other… not so?

And we can list a few because we are all guilty of

them….
1. FAILING TO OBEY OUR PARENTS. EPHESIANS 6:1

2.CUSSING OUT OUR PARENTS. COLOSSIANS 3:8

Parents also have a responsibility in raising their children according to the
word of God?

discipline him.

from him
Even as adults, our when we become and adult we have to honor our parents by
affirming and not abandoning them.

27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due,

when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
